Rename multiple files at once from a specified directory using this simple and portable app with support for regular expression mode. #Rename file #File renamer #Batch renamer #Rename #Renamer #Batch
Tiny Renamer helps you easily rename multiple files from a specified directory. This is a feather-light and portable application that supports regular expression mode along with a replace option. It can be handled with ease by any kind of users.
Although it doesn't contain particularly compelling visual elements, the interface is easy to navigate, as it shows all options provided by the utility. You can get started by selecting a folder whose file contents you want to view in the main window.
There are three small columns displayed: for old and new names, as well as for their status. Tiny Renamer works in a rather peculiar way for a file renamer. It lets you type the old name of a file (full or partial), together with a new name to replace it with (full or partial).
After pressing the "Check" button, you can preview the new names. The status column indicates all file names selected for modifications, marking their corresponding lines with an asterisk symbol. If the strings of characters you specified match multiple file names from the list, then all those files will be modified.
The renaming procedure can be executed with one click, and this task takes little time. Regex mode can be easily enabled, and the tool can be asked to ignore cases in file names. It also integrates an option for reverting changes, in order to restore the old file names, but it didn't work in our tests. Moreover, it cannot automatically refresh the directory contents, so if you want to rename files in across more than one step, you have to specify the containing folder each time.
Since it's packed in a portable package, you can save the program files anywhere on the hard drive and just click the executable to launch Tiny Renamer. Another option is to keep it stored on a USB flash disk, in order to directly run it on any machine effortlessly. Plus, it shouldn't make any changes in your Windows registry.
Although it hasn't been updated for a long time, Tiny Renamer still works on newer Windows editions. No error dialogs popped up in our tests, and it didn't hang or crash. Tasks were carried out swiftly while CPU and RAM consumption remained minimal.
On the other hand, Tiny Renamer offers an inconvenient method for bulk file renaming. You can still test it for yourself, though, instead of taking our word for it.
