Talk-to-ChatGPT

Released at the end of 2022, ChatGPT went viral and gathered millions of users worldwide, most curious about the capabilities and the potential of the AI-based model. By default, the chatbot communicates with its users in writing, via so-called prompts that gather conversations on a specific topic. In other words, you can only send prompts to ChatGPT in writing but, as its name implies, Talk-to-ChatGPT is here to change that.

Talk-to-ChatGPT is a simple Chrome extension, so it only works if you use the ChatGPT service in this browser. With its help, you can interact with the chatbot and engage in conversations using your voice.

Due to its integrated speech recognition engine, Talk-to-ChatGPT manages to initiate new prompts in ChatGPT using voice commands rather than written ones. In turn, it also reads the answer of ChatGPT out loud, using text-to-speech technology. This makes the interaction with the chatbot even more human-like, interactive and natural. What is interesting is that the add-on provides support for multiple languages, just like ChatGPT.

Once the extension is installed in Google Chrome, you have to navigate to the official webpage of ChatGPT. Once logged in, you should see a small, floating icon comprising a “Start” button in the top right corner of the page.

Needless to say, Talk-to-ChatGPT requires permission to use your microphone. The extension’s settings can be easily configured: you can choose the AI voice to use and the communication language, the speech rate (speed) and the voice pitch. Also, it is possible to set keywords for sending the message, stopping or pausing.

The floating window of Talk-to-ChatGPT includes buttons for toggling voice recognition on and off, skipping the message that is currently being read or turning text-to-speech off altogether.

Engaging in spoken conversations with ChatGPT might make you feel like you are talking to a human being rather than an AI-based chatbot. With support for several languages and AI voices, this add-on is quite interesting and can come quite handy to ChatGPT users, at least since OpenAI decide to integrate this functionality as part of their popular chatbot.
