VMware Horizon View Client is a specialized, third-party software solution that was developed in order to enable computer and network administrators to execute tasks on remote virtual desktops without physical access to the devices they want to reach.

The application can be installed silently as well in order to enable other users to access the VMware Horizon View desktop without significant efforts. Silent installation implies that whoever uses the computer at that specific time (during setup) won't be bothered by the setup package or even notice it without using the Task Manager.

VMware Horizon View Client makes sure that you'll be able to connect to several desktops at the same time from the server computer and also switch between the devices you've connected to without logging off the currently connected user account.

Deploying the application on the target computer can be accomplished fairly easily by running the installation packs, depending on the computers' architecture type, since the developer provides support for 32-bit operating systems and computers and for 64-bit ones as well.

Connecting to a target requires that you type an address in the designated field as well as a port value in the second one. Automatic connection can be toggled as well.

System requirements

  • VMware Horizon View server
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • CPU 800 MHz or higher

What's new in VMware Horizon View Client 5.4.0:

  • Real-Time Audio-Video - You can now use webcams and microphones in a virtual desktop and run Skype, Webex, Google Hangouts, and other online conferencing applications. This feature redirects video and audio data to the desktop with a significantly lower bandwidth than can be achieved by using USB redirection. Real-Time Audio-Video is compatible with standard conferencing applications and supports standard webcams, audio USB devices, and analog audio input. Requires a VMware Horizon View 5.2 virtual desktop with the Remote Experience Agent installed. This agent is included with VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 2.
  • Microsoft Lync support on Windows 8 client systems - You can now use a Microsoft Lync 2013 client on a Windows 7 or Windows 8 Horizon View desktop to participate in Unified Communications (UC) VoIP (voice over IP) and video chat calls with Lync certified USB audio and video devices. Requires Horizon View 5.2 servers, and desktop connections must be made with the PCoIP display protocol. Recording audio is not yet supported. See the End User Computing Blog entry.
  • Flash URL Redirection - You can now use Adobe Media Server and multicast to deliver live video events in a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environment. Streaming Flash content directly to client endpoints lowers the load on the datacenter ESXi host, removes the extra routing through the datacenter, and reduces bandwidth requirements. Requires a VMware Horizon View 5.2 virtual desktop with the Remote Experience Agent installed. This agent is included with VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 2.
