Many virtual synths are original tools that bring forth unique sound design capabilities with the power of shaping the future of electronic music. However, other soft synths tend to look towards the past; this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since the analog sounds that changed music in the 1960s and 70s are far from being forgotten, and many producers today still find ways to incorporate them into their music.

The synths in the latter category are usually referred to as emulations, due to obvious reasons. But sometimes, there are a few emulations that aren’t content with just being digital versions of iconic instruments. Such is the case of Oddity2.

The instrument that Oddity2 emulates is none other than the ARP Odyssey, a legendary instrument that was used by the likes of David Bowie, Elton John, REM, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and Jean-Michel Jarre. The ARP Odyssey was introduced in 1972 as a portable performance synth that was also more affordable than the (also legendary) Minimoog.

Believe it or not, a physical version of the ARP Odyssey is still manufactured today, although not by its original company. But let’s get back on track and see what the digital version - Oddity2 - has to offer.

As soon as you start playing Oddity2, you may want to turn your speakers or your headphones down. This is an aggressive synth and its power is audible through each note. The best improvement from the original analog synth and the first Oddity soft synth is Oddity2’s polyphonic mode. Whereas the ARP Odyssey and the original emulation were duophonic (meaning they could play a maximum of two notes at the same time), this plugin allows you to play a maximum of 32 notes simultaneously.

The interface stays true to the original ARP Odyssey layout, although it adds new elements, such as the sub-oscillator, the XLFO, the ring modulator, and the XADSR. While it’s not the most user-friendly interface, the quality and versatility of its sound, as well as its generous banks of presets make Oddity2 a must-have for analog synth lovers.
