Before the trend of going online to listen to your favorite mix tapes and artists, you had to pop a CD in the tray and use your preferred audio player to enjoy music. Various controls are found on such a desktop application, and if you’re looking to try something new, maybe Tom's MP3 Player is the alternative for you.

With setup taking a little while and effort, you can check out the set of features in no time at all. The main window can take some space though, with all elements in a single panel, even if the intention is to blend them together in an appealing design. Functions and other operations are easy to identify, and there’s no trouble in accommodating.

Sure enough one of the first steps is to load one or more songs to see if everything works. Sadly, you can’t just drag them over the main window, and file support is limited to MP3 and WAV, as well as M3U for playlists. When you add and configure your own list of songs, these can be saved to file and easily imported at any time.

Playback controls are accompanied by a set of sliders, one for volume, while the other for balance. There’s also the possibility to loop one track, the whole playlist, and even turn on shuffle for a surprise with each next track. Here is the place you also decide whether or not to use effects.

However, don’t expect to find too many possibilities of enhancing sound. What you do get to work with are several slides, which represent reverb intensity, and a 10-band equalizer. Sadly, there aren’t any presets to load, but you can save your own configuration to use later on.

All things considered, we can safely state that Tom’s MP3 Player isn’t quite the alternative you’re hoping to find. Although tries to make a good impression, the visual design is pretty rough, and the main window takes up a bit too much space. File support is rather poor, while minor details like time indicator for playlist tracks have a considerable impact on overall practicality.
