Mute Current Application

It’s a scenario you are likely familiar with: an application or game that is in the foreground begins generating very loud noises, so much so it becomes irritating and blocks out things you actually want to hear, such as music or voice chat.

Mute Current Application allows you to block all sounds coming from the foreground program instantly, without affecting other apps running in the background. It relies on an Autohotkey script and uses the F1 key as a shortcut.

The downloadable file contains all the required components, so there is nothing for you to configure. Once you have opened the app, it will be minimized to the system tray and enable the new hotkey.

From now on, you only have to press F1 to mute any application that is in focus instantly. No other programs will be affected, and you can unmute the app by just pressing the same key a second time.

This application’s simplicity works to its advantage, for the most part, but there are a few negative aspects to mention as well. Most importantly, an error message will be displayed if you try to mute an application that isn’t generating sound, which is less than ideal.

Also, there is no way to change the default hotkey without downloading the source files and compiling the application yourself. Needless to say, many users will not be happy with this.

Make no mistake, Mute Current Application is a rudimentary program that only offers basic functionality, but that’s exactly what some users need. However, keep in mind that the default hotkey can’t be changed easily, and the program will display an error message if you try to mute an app that isn’t producing sound.
