In simple terms, sampling is converting a continuous sound signal into a discrete-time signal. The most common example is the conversion of a sound wave (which is a continuous signal) to a sequence of samples (which represents a discrete-time signal). It’s safe to say that, the higher the sample rate of an audio production, the higher the sound quality will be.

The sample rate (also called sampling frequency) is used to measure how many samples per second are captured from a continuous sound. The process is usually expressed in kilohertz, so, if you see a sampling rate of 48 kHz, it means that the analog signal has been sampled 48.000 times per second. In the following paragraphs, I’ll do my best to explain how Voxengo r8brain fits into all of this and why it could be useful.

You may have noticed that many high quality audio files have the sample rate of 44.1 kHz. This is because the number represents the standard sample rate of any audio CD, from which the early digital music files were ripped. Actually, the standard was first used to record digital sound on analog video cassettes, but that’s another story.

The point is that, even today, if you produce a song at sample rate higher than 44.1 kHz, you would still need to convert it to that standard before you could write it on a CD. This where Voxengo r8brain can be useful, because it is a free and simple converting tool, that works with WAV and AIFF files.

Keep in mind that Voxengo r8brain is to be used mainly with unprocessed audio files that are the end result of the production process. It will use an advanced algorithm in order to resample your music, but you can also change the bit depth of the output file and the bandwidth. Also, remember that the 44.1 kHz is only the standard of audio CDs and MP3s, so you could also use the program to resample your files to a higher rate and bit depth.
