GrabNDrop

There are many applications out there that can help you take desktop screenshots but not all of them meet the requirements of demanding users. GrabNDrop brings to the table a few features that make it stand out, although there are missing options that could really add to its value.

Like many other programs in the same category, GrabNDrop runs in the system tray, so as not to interfere with your work. It can be easily accessed via the right-click menu, which comprises a few configuration settings related to the snapshot quality and the output format. Unfortunately, the range of file types snapshots can be saved in is quite limited, only including PNG and JPEG.

Other options enable you to activate the 'Print Screen' button on the keyboard as a hotkey for capturing the entire desktop with GrabNDrop. On the downside, custom shortcut keys cannot be configured, meaning it’s not possible to assign a key combination to capturing a certain desktop area.

Once ‘Grab’ is selected from the menu, GrabNDrop displays a resizable box that you can use to select the screen area (whose dimensions are shown) to capture. Pressing the ‘Enter’ key opens a new window where the captured image can be previewed.

Thanks to the dedicated tool, GrabNDrop enables you to draw freely on the picture using different colors to highlight important sections. However, this is the only editing option you have, although a set of effects that can be applied on the spot, or crop and rotate buttons would be as useful, if not more.

What is interesting about GrabNDrop is that it makes it possible for users to send the captured image via email very easily, with the push of a button. Moreover, the picture can be dragged and dropped from the ‘Preview’ window into any compatible application, without having to save it first. The idea is not bad at all and many might find it useful, but it would be nice to have a ‘Save’ option as an alternative.

GrabNDrop is a promising app that is worth trying, especially since it comes with an open-source license. But it has a long way to go before it can compete with the most feature-rich apps in its category. For now, there are a few missing functions that are rather important, such as capturing the active window, delayed actions or watermarking options, which add to the ones mentioned above.
