Designed mainly for network and system administrators, PortCheck provides a console-based application that, as its name implies, can verify the availability of TCP ports. To put it another way, it enables users to send echo requests to certain ports and check whether a response is received from a device or whether the port is open.

One might want to take the time to read about all the parameters of PortCheck so as to use it at its full potential. Running the executable with no arguments reveals a few details about te syntax, the additional parameters and a few usage examples.

The only mandatory parameters are the hostname(s) and the port number(s). All the others are optional and can be excluded. Hostnames and ports are to be separated by comma, but for the latter one can also add ranges of ports or well-known ports.

PortCheck enables users to configure the timeout of the request and comes with options to attach a custom description to a port. All its findings and a list of the performed actions can be sent to a log file.

There are a few extra parameters one can use. For instance, if the user wants to get information about a port as soon as it becomes available, then he can opt for a continuous checking and a discrete alarm signal. PortCheck can be configured to wait for a specific period of time between two consecutive checks.

Additional options allow it to reveal opened ports only and change the color codes for the application.

Programmers can use PortCheck in their batch files, as the application also returns the ERRORLEVEL based on the answer it gets: if there is no answer, so the port is free, the ERRORLEVEL is 0, and 1 otherwise.

PortCheck sends requests to see if it receives an answer on a particular port, revealing the answer time and a color-coded output. As it can verify multiple devices and multiple ports at once, and notify you about changes in the status of a port, it becomes a valuable utility in the toolbox of any system or network admin.
