CacheSet is a lightweight and user-friendly utility that enables users to fine-tune the parameters of the system file cache. To put it simply, the role of the tool is to enable users to control the minimum and maximum working set sizes of the system cache, reset it or force it to grow as necessary and according to the actions taken on the computer.
The tool might be easily mistaken for CacheMan, but there are several noteworthy differences. For starters, the tool is compatible with all NT versions and can work without any further edits to the Service Pack release. Secondly, it is capable of enhancing the system cache in a more intuitive manner compared to CacheMan that entails tinkering with the internal variables.
To use the application, users must first make sure that they have the Increase Quota on, a feature that is turned on by default with Administrator accounts. Once accessed, the tool displays and refreshes the system cache every couple of seconds and shows the maximum peak size it reached since the last reboot. Users can configure the new minimum and maximum working sets according to their needs and preferences. The latter process simply means entering the values in the dedicated boxes and hitting Apply.
