Windows reads a file according to its type, which is dictated by its extension before anything else. Similar programs can all read a particular file type, with the default open option subject to change every time you install a program which recognizes that extension. To view and modify dependencies, Gunners File Type Editor can be of great help.
The application can be used on multiple computers directly from a USB flash drive, since it requires no installation in order to properly function. Portability here also means that system registries remain intact, thus not affecting the stability of the target PC.
On launch, the application reads all registered extensions, showing the total number in the status bar, from which some are either tied to the system, or manually set to run with a program of your choice. These are also displayed in two separate columns, one for system, while the other for the current user.
A simple selection of a file extension reveals all related details in a dedicated section. Info such as file type, perceived type, content, opens with, path, arguments, or associated DLLs are shown. You can also add new extensions in case you don’t find one of particular interest.
All properties you view can be changed. This is done in a dedicated panel, which enables you to modify simple details like the icon, perceived type, or content type, to more advanced options like the default program to open it, DDE and arguments, or even special flags, such as deletion, verbs, icon, description, and other parameters.
It can be a little difficult to find an extension of interest in the default tabs, especially since the full stop prefix prevents you from jumping to a specific item by pressing the first character button. On the other hand, there is a search function you can use in this regard.
Bottom line is that it’s a good idea to know, and set default programs to handle various file types. Improper assignment can lead to compatibility issues, and build up a lot of frustration. Luckily, Gunners File Type Editor manages to live up to expectations, allowing you to view all about registered extensions, and change details if necessary.
