It is not always that easy to estimate which local folders take up most space on your computer and might need a cleanup, but there are means of doing this without too much effort, with the help of software.

Once such solution is FolderUsage, a user-friendly tool that can quickly analyze a selected directory and inform you of the amount of files comprised, along with their total size, so you can take measures and begin removing useless ones.

In regards to its looks, the application comes with a very straightforward and neatly structured GUI, with a text field where the targeted disk or folder can be indicated, while two parallel panels display the results.

FolderUsage supports shell integration, allowing you to add the utility to your Windows context menu and thus letting you use it on any directory you come across, just by right-clicking it.

To conduct a new analysis, you need only select the targeted folder, which can very well be a system partition. Clicking on the ‘Analyze’ button will trigger the operation and depending on the amount of space that it needs to look through, the program will display the results in the ‘Folders’ and ‘Files’ panels, respectively.

In the former panel, you can view the amount of space each directory consumes, along with the number of subfolders and files. The context menu options allow you to choose different sorting preferences, analyze a branch or delete a folder.

There is no function for generating a report, but you do have the possibility of copying the information from a node to the clipboard, so you can later paste it into a different file or window. In the ‘Files’ section, you can view a more detailed account of the comprised entries, organizing them by size and letting you delete unwanted entries from the right-click menu.

Overall, FolderUsage is a handy and effective piece of software whose main purpose resides in helping you determine the space hogs from your computer and deal with them as you see fit, all with little to no effort required.
