L7TR is a small New Hampshire R&D company that is working on an innovative mechanism to support the interaction between Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This is being done in the context of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) proposal. As part of this proposal, L7TR is looking for non-IoT educational and cultural applications of this technology. Because we are evaluating applications in several scenarios including

What is IoT?
Internet of Things or IoT is term that describes technologies that enable the communication between devices (like a television, a thermostat, Alexa or a smartphone).
What is this new technology about?
Traditional IoT solutions rely on radio-frequency communication (like Wi-Fi). Most of this spectrum used by these technologies is saturated and overcrowded. As part of the first phase of this project, we are exploring the use of ultrasound as an alternative for IoT communication (see reference below for detailed technical information).

What is L7TR looking for?
In the context of a museum, the technology can be used for track and trace, where a visitor can be guided throughout an exhibition by means of a smartphone application. Specifically, the application interacts with a network of small inexpensive devices (known as gateways) located throughout the museum. These gateways provide double functionality:
They open a communication path between the gateways and the smartphones to send the visitors real-time information and surveys.
They help visitors find a specific item/location in the exposition/museum. Because of the nature of ultrasonic signals, it provides a highly precise mechanism for indoor geolocation (similar to traditional outdoor GPS).
In the example above, the visitor on a smartphone (blue circle), is guided by the IoT gateways (black circles) to reach a specific item. Along the way, the visitor receives real-time information and updates.
