Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a useful 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format created by CompuServe in 1987. Since then it has become wide used for its wide support and portability. GIF supports online drawings, pictures with blocks of solid colors, and pictures with sharp boundaries between colors. GIF is unsuitable for photographs due to its 256 distinct colors from the over 16 million representable in 24-bit RGB limitation. However, there is a hack that can overcome this limitation under certain circumstances. On the process of compressing, there is no information lost in GIF files.
