DiskDigger Changelog

What's new in DiskDigger 2.0.1.3851

Feb 20, 2024
  • Interface updates:
  • The interface has been made simpler, yet more powerful. After selecting the drive you want to scan, you simply select the types of files you'd like to look for, and DiskDigger does the rest. There are options to search for "All file types" or "Specific file types". Selecting a specific file type may result in slightly faster performance.
  • When the scan is completed (or during!), DiskDigger organizes recoverable files into two tabs: "Found in file system" and "Found in free space". The files in the "file system" tab are recovered through parsing the file system structures on the disk, and the files in the "free space" tab are found outside of the file system, or from a corrupted disk, or from the free space on your disk.
  • The interface now also has improved support for high-DPI displays, adapting its fonts and icons more properly to your screen's pixel density.
  • Data recovery engine updates:
  • The data recovery algorithms that power DiskDigger have been streamlined and unified. In previous versions, users needed to select between two different modes of recovery ("deep" and "deeper" mode), but no more: in the newest version these have been combined into a single scan of your disk, which performs both a filesystem-aware search plus a free-space carving search, and makes all the results available to you for browsing, filtering, and recovering.
  • Support for ReFS has been further expanded from the previous version.
  • Improved support for recovering files in unallocated clusters in exFAT partitions.
  • Tons of additional minor bug fixes and enhancements.

New in DiskDigger 1.83.67.3491 (Nov 14, 2023)

  • Improved detection of special types of logical drives, such as encrypted volumes.

New in DiskDigger 1.83.67.3413 (Sep 16, 2023)

  • Expanded support for recovering raw camera formats (Sony .ARW, Canon CR3, etc).
  • Improved support for older Apple file systems (HFS+ and HFS).
  • Fixed a few bugs that might cause instability when recovering very large files.

New in DiskDigger 1.73.59.3361 (Jan 9, 2023)

  • Overhauled the way that DiskDigger searches NTFS partitions for recoverable files, making it more efficient and more likely to pinpoint the files you're looking for.
  • Updated and improved recovery of raw camera formats (SR2, CR3, NEF, etc.) to include more potential variations of these formats from different manufacturers. This will maximize the possibility of DiskDigger to recover photos that were deleted from memory cards, or from memory cards that have been reformatted.
  • Improved the overall resource efficiency of the program, making it use less total RAM when running, which will make it work better on less powerful or older PCs.

New in DiskDigger 1.67.23.3251 (Jun 13, 2022)

  • Added support for recovering .CLIP (Clip Studio Paint) files in "Dig Deeper" mode.
  • Added support for recovering .TCX (Training Center XML) files.
  • Added a new experimental feature for searching for strings of text on the disk. When selecting the scanning mode (i.e. "Dig Deep" or "Dig Deeper") go to the Advanced tab and click the "Show experimental features" button. You can then enter the text to search for, and specify the character encoding of the string, which can be ASCII, UTF-8, UTF-16, or hex values. When you proceed with scanning, DiskDigger will display a list of sectors where the specified text is found. You can then "recover" the contents starting from that sector, up to a size that you specify.
  • Improved overall scan efficiency, as well as decreased the executable size (1.7 MB), although it was rather small already!
  • Updated multilingual translations.

New in DiskDigger 1.47.83.3121 (Jun 28, 2021)

  • Added support for recovering the latest version of Canon Raw images (.CR3).
  • Improved support for recovering Adobe Digital Negative (.DNG) images.
  • Added support for recovering iCalendar (.ICS) files.

New in DiskDigger 1.43.67.3083 (Jan 18, 2021)

  • Improved accuracy and efficiency of detecting certain raw camera formats, including Nikon (NEF) and Canon (.CR2).
  • Revamped and improved recovery of .MP3 audio files. Will now recover a wider range of .MP3 files from different sources and devices.
  • Added support for recovering .AAC audio files.
  • Added an advanced option to perform a more thorough search for .MP3 or .AAC audio. After selecting "Dig deeper" mode (when selecting the types of files to search for), go to the Advanced tab and select the "Extra deep MP3 search" option. This option is still experimental and is not selected by default, since it can produce false positives.
  • Added another advanced option to start the scan from a specific sector on the disk. When selecting the types of files to scan, go to the Advanced tab and enter the custom sector number in the "Starting sector to search from" text box.

New in DiskDigger 1.37.59.3049 (Aug 11, 2020)

  • Improved ability to recover compressed files in NTFS volumes. Compressed recoverable files will be automatically uncompressed when recovered.
  • Added support for detecting PostScript (.PS) and Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS) files in Dig Deeper mode.
  • Improved detection of old IBM PC-DOS partitions.
  • The list of scannable disks now lists the drive letter(s) currently mapped to that disk.
  • Improved saving and restoring of sessions, for pausing and resuming long-running scans.

New in DiskDigger 1.31.47.3037 (Jul 23, 2020)

  • Improved handling of compressed files in NTFS filesystems. When your disk is formatted with NTFS, individual files can be compressed (using a variation of LZ77) to conserve disk space. When scanning in "Dig Deep" mode, DiskDigger automatically and transparently decompresses these files, so that they can be recovered in their original state.
  • Improved handling of system-compressed files in NTFS. Windows 10, as part of its background operation, searches for certain files that are seldom used and automatically compresses them. This is different from the "standard" compression that can be applied to NTFS files. This compression is done by creating an alternate data stream (with a reparse point) called "WofCompressedData" and filling it with the compressed data, which is compressed with the Xpress or LZX algorithms. DiskDigger handles all of these cases, and automatically recovers these types of files in uncompressed form.
  • Added support for recovering Quicken data files (.QDF) in "Dig Deeper" mode.
  • Improved efficiency of recovering executable (EXE and DLL) files.
  • Fixed some possible stability issues when previewing WAV audio files.

New in DiskDigger 1.31.43.3019 (Apr 24, 2020)

  • Performance improvements when undeleting files from NTFS filesystems on certain drives.
  • Performance improvements when recovering files from HFS+ (Apple) and ext4 (Linux) filesystems.
  • Improved support for recovering damaged or corrupted DVD and CD-ROM media.
  • Improved detection of VOB video tracks on certain DVD media.
  • Added support for recovering and previewing ILBM (Amiga bitmap) images.
  • Improved support and detection of USB floppy drives.
  • Fixed an issue when reading fragmented files from FAT12 partitions.

New in DiskDigger 1.23.31.2917 (Jul 17, 2019)

New in DiskDigger 1.20.12.2767 (Mar 10, 2019)

  • "Dig Deep" mode has been enhanced with an option to show either "Deleted files only" (which was the previous default behavior) or "Deleted and existing files." This is useful when the disk is improperly formatted or partitioned (or if the partition area is damaged), but the file system itself is still healthy. When you insert the disk and Windows shows an error such as "You need to format the disk before you can use it," it’s an indication of this kind of issue. DiskDigger will now let you recover all the files from such a disk, whether or not they were actually deleted within the file system.
  • In "Dig Deep" mode, there is now improved support for scanning certain file systems that are not native to Windows, including HFS+ (used in macOS disks) and ext4 (used in Linux).
  • Enhanced support for scanning optical disks (CDs and DVDs) and the file systems that they contain, including ISO 9660 and UDF. There is also improved support for scanning damaged or improperly-burned disks: When selecting the drive to scan, you can go to the Advanced tab and check the "Detect disk size manually" box, which will make DiskDigger ignore the size of the disk as reported by the driver, and instead read the disk explicitly until it can no longer be read.

New in DiskDigger 1.20.7.2621 (Dec 17, 2018)

  • Better fault tolerance against drives that have errors, e.g. bad sectors, controller malfunctions, etc. The program will respond to a wider range of errors, and will allow you to continue past the error, or stop and recover any files that it has found so far.
  • Steamlined disk access and caching, which allows for optimized performance when scanning and recovering files.
  • Improved efficiency when recovering certain types of files, including .JPG, .DOC, and .ZIP.

New in DiskDigger 1.20.5.2591 (Jun 25, 2018)

New in DiskDigger 1.18.16.2357 (Jan 18, 2018)

  • Revamped and improved support for scanning disk images. Ideal for professional forensic analysis, as well as personal recovery of disk images, all of these types of disk images are supported:
  • E01 and EWF images (Expert Witness Format) saved by EnCase and various other tools. If the image is broken into multiple segments (E01, E02, etc.), just open the E01 segment and DiskDigger will detect the other segments automatically.
  • VMDK images, used by VmWare.
  • VDI images, used by VirtualBox.
  • VHD images, used by Microsoft VirtualPC.
  • Plain 'dd' raw images.
  • Open any of the above disk image types by launching DiskDigger and clicking the Advanced tab, where you should see the option to scan a disk image. Once you select the image file, the type of the image will be detected automatically.
  • E01 files themselves can now be recovered in "dig deeper" mode.
