New in NuGet Package Explorer 2.7 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • Fully compatible with NuGet 1.7
  • Support browsing packages from local directory
  • Starting from 2.7, you can browse packages from a local directory, in addition to browsing a WCF Data Service-backed feed as before. Note that because there is no concept of downloading a local package, the Downloads column will all be 0.
  • Show icon next to readme.txt file
  • NuGet 1.7 recognizes readme.txt file at the root of your package. When NuGet installs such a package, it automatically opens the file after finishing installing the package. NuGet Package Explorer will show a special icon next to readme.txt file to reflect this special treatment.

New in NuGet Package Explorer 2.0 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • Compatible with NuGet 1.5
  • NuGet 1.5 adds a couple of new metadata to the .nuspec file format. These include the Copyright, Release Notes and References elements. NPE 2.0 adds support for these attributes in the metadata editor.
  • As an added bonus, NPE 2.0 also adds a convenient command to the file context menu to allow quickly adding an assembly to the References collection.
  • Added Package Analysis command
  • NPE 2.0 adds a new command called Package Analysis. Think of it as the equivalent of FxCop for NuGet package authoring. When you choose Tools – Analyze Package command, NPE will analyze the contents of the current package, including metadata, based on a set of default rules and reports all potential issues with it. These rules represent best practices for package authoring that are recommended by the NuGet team. The rules are extensible via plugins
  • Work with Basic Authentication feeds
  • NPE 2.0 now works with package feeds that require Basic Authentication. When requesting packages from these feeds, the familiar credential dialog will pop up asking for your username and password. This means you can use NPE to open your private MyGet feeds.
  • More extensibility points for plugins
  • NPE 1.5 introduced the concept of plugins. However, prior to 2.0, you can only write custom viewers for package file content. In 2.0, there are two new extensibility points:
  • Custom package command - You can write a custom package command which will be displayed as a menu item under Tools. The command has access to an IPackage instance, which represents the currently opened package.
  • Custom rule – You can write a custom rule which augments the set of default rules used by the Analyze Package command.
  • For more details on the API, refer to the plugin tutorial.
  • Package Dependencies show as hyperlinks
  • Now in the package metadata panel, if a package has a dependency on another package, the dependency will be displayed as a hyperlink. Clicking the hyperlink will open the Package Chooser dialog and automatically search for the dependency package’s ID.

New in NuGet Package Explorer 1.6 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • New UI theme
  • Now that Package Explorer has become an essential tool in the NuGet community, I realize that it deserves a better look and feel than the default WPF style. In this release, I have decided to apply a modern UI theme to make Package Explorer look more like a professional development tool.
  • Publish package to a custom source
  • Before 1.6, you can only publish packages to nuget.org gallery. Recently, however, the increasing popularity of myget.org brings about the needs to publish packages to custom package sources. So I’ve added just that in 1.6. The Publish Package dialog now allows you to set the Publish Url and the corresponding Publish key.
  • Drag folders into Package contents pane
  • Prior to 1.6, you can add files to the current package by dragging files from Windows Explorer into the “Package contents” pane. You can’t, however, drag folders into it. In 1.6, this limitation has been removed. Drag whatever you like now . Note that when  you drag a folder, all sub folders and files inside it are recursively added to the package.
  • Framework assembly name dropdown
  • New in 1.6, when you edit package metadata and want to add framework assembly references, you’ll find it convenient that the text box control for Assembly name has been replaced by a combo box, with all the common .NET 4.0 assembly names pre-populated. It allows you to easily select the assembly names without typing them. Note that it’s still up to you to determine which target frameworks the selected assembly applies to. Package Explorer won’t do that for you.

New in NuGet Package Explorer 1.5 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • In addition to many bug fixes and usability enhancements, this release introduces 4 new features.
  • Windows Vista/Windows 7-styled dialogs
  • In 1.5, you will notice that MessageBox dialogs have been replaced with Task Dialogs that were introduced in Windows Vista. On Windows XP machines, it will revert back to MessageBox.
  • Improved Select Package dialog
  • In 1.1 and earlier versions, the Select Package dialog shows all versions of the packages but do not group them by Id. This sometimes makes it difficult to get the latest version of a popular package because the latest version may not always have the most downloads.
  • Now in 1.5, by default, the dialog will show only the latest version of each package, but with a twist. The download count and rating for each package will be the aggregate values of all versions of that Id.
  • Notice the checkbox at the bottom. Unchecking that box will show all versions of the packages instead of just the latest versions. However, unlike in 1.1, the packages are now grouped by Id. Sorting by download count or rating are still based on the aggregate values.
  • Another improvement to this dialog is that when you close it, it will be hidden in the background instead of getting discarded. So the next time you open it, it is simply brought back to the front in the same state as when you closed it. This means you don’t lose your search query and page number.
  • Plugin mechanism for showing file contents
  • Before 1.5, Package Explorer can’t display content of binary files inside a package. In 1.5, an MEF-based plugin mechanism is added to remedy this. Plugins can register themselves to handle showing one or more file extensions. There are two built-in plugins that show the contents of .net assemblies and image files. You can also write new plugins to handle unsupported file extensions. For a tutorial of how to write plugins for Package Explorer, read here.
  • Resizable Package Metadata panel
  • If you find the default width of the Package Metadata panel too small, here’s a good news for you. You can now resize it by dragging the grip between the package metadata panel and the package content panel.

New in NuGet Package Explorer 1.1 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • Overall, this release focuses on improving performance and usability of the application, while still adding a number of small features that I’m sure you’ll like.
  • Save package metadata
  • Under File menu, you’ll find a new Save Metadata As… command, which allows you to save the current package’s metadata into a .nuspec file.
  • Easily add predefined framework folders under lib
  • Package Explorer 1.0 allows you to easily add special top-level folders (content, lib and tools) to your package. In 1.1, the experience is even better; you can now right click on the ‘lib’ folder and select common folders to add to it. So, no more remembering what the correct name of Windows Phone folder is.
  • Work with different network proxies.
  • Some users reported that Package Explorer 1.0 didn’t work well with some network proxies. We have fixed this issue (or so we hope ) in 1.1.
  • The Select Package dialog now shows Rating values
  • Of course, you can sort by Rating value too. And speaking of this dialog, it is now smart enough to do a Select query on the Odata feed so that it only queries the five displayed properties (Id, Version, Authors, Rating and Downloads), instead of querying for all package metadata as in 1.0. As a result, the total download size is cut in half for every page. Coupled with the fact that the nuget.org server has now enabled gzip compression feature, this dialog should load really fast.
  • Take advantage of NuGet local machine cache
  • NuGet 1.3 introduces a local machine cache where it stores the most recently downloaded packages. Package Explorer 1.1 will know to look into this cache before attempting to download packages.
  • Drag and drop files between folders
  • In 1.0, you can drag files from Windows Explorer into the Package contents panel to add files. Now in 1.1, you can also drag and drop files between different folders.
  • Save package directly from the Edit Package Metadata view
  • In 1.0, while you are editing package metadata, you have to click the OK button before you can save the current package. Package Explorer 1.1 eliminates that extra step. If you click Ctrl+S (or choose File – Save) while in edit view, it will automatically validate the inputs. If all inputs are valid, it will close the edit view and save package at the same time. Otherwise, if one of the inputs is invalid, the package is NOT saved and you remain in the edit view.
  • Show visual aid when the package is dirty
  • Package Explorer 1.1 will show a blue dot at the bottom right corner whenever your package becomes dirty, e.g. you have edited metadata or added/deleted a file.

New in NuGet Package Explorer 1.0 (Jul 22, 2015)

  • Compatible with NuGet 1.2
  • Package Explorer 1.0 can open packages that are created by nuget.exe 1.2. (Previous versions cannot due to a breaking change in the .nuspec schema.)
  • Support adding GAC assembly references
  • NuGet 1.2 adds support for setting references to GAC assemblies in the .nuspec file. Package Explorer 1.0 allows you to set them in the package metadata editor.
  • Support opening .nuspec files directly
  • In addition to .nupkg file, Package Explorer 1.0 also allows you to open .nuspec files directly. It is as if you run nuget.exe on the .nuspec file and then open the resulting .nupkg file, but now Package Explorer saves you from the middle step. 4.
  • Export package to files
  • Think of this as the reverse operation of packaging. When you have opened a package, say from the NuGet feed, you can choose File – Export, and then specify a folder. Package Explorer will then export all the content files of the package to that folder, including the .nuspec file.
  • Syntax coloring for the content viewer
  • The content viewer has been enhanced with the syntax coloring capability, thanks to Drew Miller’s awesome ColorCode library. It supports most common languages.
  • MRU list
  • There is now a MRU list under the File menu which keeps the 7 most recently opened packages. It works for both local packages and online packages.
  • Various bug fixes and UI enhancements
  • This release includes various bug fixes, UI enhancements and performance improvements.
