Fortix 2

Fortix 2 is a game described by its makers Nemesys Games as a reverse turret defense game, but that is something concocted for the younger generation, which has never seen this kind of games before. Let's take a closer look at Fortix 2.

It's not every day that you get to reminisce about a long forgotten and almost dead genre of games. A quarter of a century ago (yes, that long) it was easy to make games that started new genres. People were still inventing stuff in this industry and it wasn't hard. Most of the genres survived over the years, but some games didn't make it. They are now only remembered by the older generation.

In this case I'm talking about games like Volfied, in which you piloted a ship that had only one job, to take away screen space from the enemy. This is pretty much as close as you can get to a description. Players would control the ship while trying to avoid enemies. You had to slowly control more and more space by drawing lines and connecting them to your zone. As long as you stood on you line, you would be untouchable. You would only become vulnerable while drawing lines. Confused?

Gameplay

Explaining the gameplay concept of Volfied or Fortix 2 out loud or in writing feels ridiculous, yet playing the game doesn't feel like that. This is probably one of the reasons why the genre slowly disappeared. People were playing awesome games and they couldn't describe them to their friends. With no YouTube back then, words were simply not enough.

At one point, the same gameplay principle was used in some arcade games that allowed players to undress women. Not even the naked women were able to save this genre from obliteration. Now, the developers from Nemesys Games are trying to revive it with Fortix 2, which uses a much more light-hearted approach.

Players control a brave knight in this quest to defeat the evil mage Xitrof and you'll have to face cannons, defense towers, ogres, and all sorts of dragons. That's pretty much the story, and you don't really have to concern yourself with it.

Users have access to a world map with all the levels, and once you have completed one of them, you can return anytime and in order to try to get a better score. You have a number of lives in each stage, so you need to be careful when starting a new level.

The levels do get progressively harder, with more and more obstacles. Fortunately, the rules and the tactics haven't changed all that much in the past 25 years. You always have to remember to build little by little. You're going to be tempted to try to cover a lot of ground all in one swift move. It will work for the early stages, but it's going to get you killed in the later ones.

Don't forget that from time to time you'll have various bonuses on the map. They are represented by start and you need to grab them in your area in order to activate them. They are either speed, a new life, a shield, invisibility, or a freeze for all the enemies on the table. Again, even if you’ve got one of these bonuses, don't try to cover too much ground, because they usually last for just a little while.

That's pretty much it. If you remember that it's more important to finish the game than to finish it quickly, you're not going to have a problem with Fortix 2.

The Good

  • A genre reborn
  • Slow learning curve
  • Needs few hardware resources

The Bad

  • Lacks any real challenge

Conclusion

Fortix 2 is not Volfied, that's pretty much a guarantee. It's a lot more light hearted and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It's not running for the game of the year, but it's fun to play and will bring you back to the golden times of gaming. It's also pretty much the only one in this genre, so if you never tried something similar, then you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot.
