If you're the type of person that will laugh at even the silliest of things, then you'll love what this title will bring you

Games new and old have blessed us with stories that are more or less memorable, some even earning their own spin-off novels. The problem is that we live in a world where everyone thinks of themselves as a great detective or writer and because of that they always try to find plot holes in the stories, thus ruining the game for both themselves as well as others.

Plot? What plot?

Super Cane Magic Zero doesn’t have to worry about having its story dissected for plot holes , because anyone trying to make any sense of the story will most likely get a brain aneurysm, and I'm saying it in a good way. The game is heavily inspired by the work of Italian YouTube cartoonist Simone “Sio” Albrigi, so anyone that’s already a fan of his knows exactly what to expect. This is mostly noticeable through the game’s art-style, which looks like the cross between a 5-year-old’s doodles and…..well... that’s pretty much it, but I loved it nevertheless.

A game defined by the phrase “Why not?”

Down to the very basics, Super Cane Magic Zero is a Co-Op action-arcade RPG where you control a character on a quest to…….well I have no idea, but it has something to do with a magical dog, as you'll see by the end of the game. You can select from a wide roster of classes (that is if you consider being a Plumber or an Influencer a character class), each with their own unique stats and abilities.

You then set out in a mad world where all the rules are broken, quests have no sense, and the monsters are so ridiculous that you’ll end up with a twitching eye, but not from sitting too much in front of the screen. More so, pretty much any text within the game, from intros to character dialogues, will either make you laugh until you drop, or make you ask yourself "what was the developer on when he made this game?".

You can pick up whatever items you can find, and use them as either a projectile or a food source. One of the few shreds of logic present in the game is that it is far more efficient to throw a rock at an enemy and eat a banana than trying to do vice-versa.

Party like crazy

The best way to play a game that makes no sense is to enjoy it with people with whom you feel comfortable laughing at things that make no sense, so a couch party is the best excuse to pick up this title and try it. You can all play in the same Story Mode, or go head-to-head against each other in the Arena Mode, where the wide selection of PvP game modes will make you test out a variety of ways of busting heads in-game and losing friends in real life. Combat is extremely dynamic and most of the times it will be hard for you to take the game seriously because of the graphics, so losing a match won’t feel all that bad, even if you did die from poisoning, burns or being hit in the head with a fried chicken.

The “R” in “RPG” comes from “Randomness”

Beyond all the wackiness, the game is an RPG after all, so proper itemization and stat allocation are crucial for a smooth gameplay. You have your typical level-up system, talents in which you can invest points, and of course loot that can drop from mobs or be found in containers. One thing you must remember is that when I use the word “loot”, I’m not talking about epic armor, swords or guns, but things like magical underpants, baby bottles, police batons and giant forks. This loot is procedurally generated, so don’t bother trying to itemize or plan your character's build ahead, because you’ll never know what will drop next. Fortunately, classes have no item restrictions, so bakers will be able to wear the same gear as wizards.

The Good

  • The wacky atmosphere
  • The familiar art style
  • The humor
  • The abundance in PvP maps
  • The support for up to 4 players

The Bad

  • Soundtrack can get annoying fast
  • Not everyone may appreciate the game's unique approach
  • Lack of direction with certain puzzles

Conclusion

Super Cane Magic Zero is one of those games that you play when you just don’t care anymore and are simply interested in having a good time, and if you have friends next to you and a few controllers to spare, even better! Some may not like the game’s style of humor, while others may fall in love with this gem precisely because of it, as more often than naught you'll either be laughing in tears or scratching your head in confusion. In the end, the looney atmosphere is what makes the game feel unique, and if you’re a fan of comedy where nothing makes sense, then you shouldn’t think twice about trying this title.
