The official Facebook app was launched with Windows 8.1

The official Facebook app for the Modern UI was launched with much fanfare in late 2013, when Microsoft introduced Windows 8.1, with Redmond promising a new avalanche of apps that would make its touch-optimized environment a little bit more useful.

Since then, the number of downloads for the Facebook app has increased significantly, so it quickly became the top app in the Windows Store on the desktop.

Not the same thing can be said about the updates the app has actually received, as Facebook has apparently abandoned the idea of new features and performance improvements for the Modern UI client, so consumers now have to use the very same version as 8 months ago.

The latest update received by Facebook for Windows 8.1 was released in August 2014, which is kind of weird for an application which continues to be not only one of the most widely used by modern Windows adopters but also the top most downloaded app in the entire store right now.

Of course, this shouldn't be a problem if the app works just as expected, but unfortunately, this isn't the case this time. Many of the reviews published in the store point to bugs and call for new features, so the lack of interest coming from Facebook, and at some level from Microsoft, could be a bit surprising.

To make sure that the app isn't yet abandoned, we've reached out to Microsoft for more information, so we will update this when we get an answer.
