Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer, officially becomes the new Senior Advisor to the CEO, the Redmond-based technology giant announced in an internal memo published by AllThingsD.

While the new role doesn’t seem to pinpoint his responsibilities very clearly, Microsoft has already updated Mundie’s biography on the official website, claiming that “he works on key strategic projects within the company, as well as with government and business leaders around the world on technology policy, regulation and standards.”

According to the source, Steve Ballmer has confirmed the move via an internal memo sent to employees in mid-December, but the company is yet to announce the shift publicly.

“Over his career, Craig has brought great value to the groups and initiatives he has started and overseen and now brings that wealth of experience to his new role. Craig has also been instrumental in building relationships with governments and policymakers around the world,” Ballmer said.
