The Indian software market still goes well for Microsoft

Microsoft is often referred to as the world's largest software company, but without any accurate figures, it's hard for some to actually believe that Redmond continues to be the number one software firm in the world.

And yet, IT advisory firm Gartner claims that, at least in India, Microsoft is clearly the number one software company, accounting for no less than 25 percent of all software sales in the country.

According to Gartner data published by India Times, the software market in India reached $4 billion (€3.6 billion) last year, an increase of 8.3 percent over 2013, with Microsoft getting a quarter of this.

The top three software companies in India, namely Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM, represent no less than 50 percent of all sales in the country, so it's pretty clear that there's a huge gap between the leaders and the other three software makers.

India posted the biggest growth when it comes to software sales in the BRICS region, the source adds, which includes China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa.

India has become a priority for Microsoft, not because of the growing sales, but because of the talent that's available in the country, with the company's CEO Satya Nadella himself being born in this country. Microsoft currently has offices in 13 cities in India and employs 6,500 workers, with the current headquarters being located in Hyderabad.
