Microsoft is reportedly working on a touch-enabled watch device that would help the Redmond-based giant compete against the likes of Apple and Samsung, both of which are preparing similar units that could see daylight in the coming months.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has asked Asian suppliers to ship components for what seems to be a watch device featuring a 1.5-inch touchscreen display.

It’s not yet clear whether the company wants to give the project the green light for production or at least develop a concept, but it’s a sign that Microsoft is at least considering doing so.

Apple could become Microsoft’s fiercest rival in this particular market, as the fruit-named company is already prepping a so-called iWatch that could hit the market sometime this year. Samsung is also reportedly working on its own smart watch, again projected to go on sale in the near future.
