Microsoft has released two new Windows security updates today in addition to those launched on Patch Tuesday, as the company is trying to fix a couple of new flaws in its operating system.

Just as Microsoft writes in security advisory 2862973, the update is supposed to restrict the use of certificates with MD5 hashes in most Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, and RT.

“This restriction is limited to certificates issued under roots in the Microsoft root certificate program. Usage of MD5 hash algorithm in certificates could allow an attacker to spoof content, perform phishing attacks, or perform man-in-the-middle attacks,” the company explained.

A second update is here to “provide additional defense-in-depth measures for Remote Desktop Protocol Network Level Authentication,” as the company wrote in a different notification.

This time, the patch is aimed at Windows Vista, 7, and Server platforms, so Windows 8 and RT users won’t see the update.
