Some users are still unable to download and install the new Windows OS version

Windows 8.1 was officially launched on October 17 in the Windows Store and although it was supposed to be available to all users, some are still experiencing lots of problems when trying to install it.

One of the main issues experienced by users trying to update is an error displayed just after Windows 8.1 displays the setup message reading “Getting devices ready.”

According to users who posted on Microsoft’s Community forums, the error shown on the screen seconds after that is the following:

“Couldn't update to Windows 8.1. Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC. 0xC1900101 - 0x40017.”

Users are suggesting all kinds of workarounds, but Microsoft is still looking into the issue right now, and no working solution has been found.

And still, if you’re feeling a bit lucky, you can try to disconnect USB devices, update drivers, remove security software (including firewalls) or install Windows 8.1 using the dedicated ISOs, as some people have apparently managed to get past the error and complete the setup this way.
