Microsoft officially killed Hotmail earlier this year, moving all users to the new Outlook.com that’s now integrated into most of its products.

A bunch of stats concerning Outlook.com and released today by the company seem to confirm that Redmond made the right decision to kill Hotmail, as its revamped email service also supports Microsoft’s expansion in the mobile market.

According to these numbers, 68 percent of the users access their Outlook.com inbox on a mobile device, as the service is completely optimized for handhelds. More people access Outlook.com on a mobile device than on the web, the company said, while the mobile usage of the service has tripled in the last year.

This is clearly good news for Microsoft, even though lots of users are still upset that their Hotmail account has been transferred to Outlook.com. And still, it’s most likely just a matter of time until everybody gets used to the new email platform.
