Windows Vista remains Microsoft’s number one nightmare worldwide, but it turns out that this major flop is slowly losing users, as many move to newer versions of Windows.

According to data provided by market researcher Net Applications for the month of January 2014, Windows 8.1 has managed to overtake Vista by posting a market share of 3.95 percent versus 3.30 percent.

This makes Windows 8.1 the fourth most popular desktop operating system, after Windows 7, XP and 8, but the last one is expected to lose ground in the coming months because more users would make the switch to the free 8.1 update.

Windows 8.1 was officially launched in October 2013 and comes free of charge in the form of an update that can be downloaded from the store on both desktops and tablets. A dedicated version of Windows 8.1 is also available for Windows RT tablets, such as Microsoft’s own Surface RT.
