Windows 8.1 is set to be unveiled for end users on October 18, so all eyes are on the RTM version that's expected to be announced by the end of the month.

Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott said in a short tweet that the tech giant had already completed work on the RTM flavor, revealing that the full build string reads 9600.16384.130821-1623.

This means that Windows 8.1 RTM is already on its way to OEMs, so expect not only an official confirmation, but also some leaks to be revealed in the coming days.

While we can't tell for sure if this is true or not, it's obviously a sign that Microsoft continues work on Windows 8.1, despite the shocking departure of CEO Steve Ballmer from the company.

As far as MSDN and TechNet subscribers are concerned, word is that they might after all get the final build of Windows 8.1 a bit earlier than everybody else.
