The number of apps in the two stores on Windows 8 and Windows Phone keeps growing, and according to stats provided by Microsoft itself, it has recently reached another important milestone.

NPU has spotted a subtle update on the Microsoft by Numbers website which reveals that there are currently no less than 560,000 apps in the two stores, signaling an important increase in the last few months.

Previous figures provided by Microsoft in November revealed that at that time there were a total of 525,000 apps in the store, so in only a couple of months the original number grew by 35,000 apps.

While it’s hard to say whether this is a good increase or not, there’s no doubt that both Windows and Windows Phone need as many apps as possible, as Microsoft’s modern platforms are still lagging behind rivals Android and iOS when it comes to this thing, which are both said to have more than 1.3 million apps in their stores.

Microsoft most likely expects this number to grow in the coming months thanks to the Windows 10 rollout, but there are also some people out there who believe that Redmond could address the lack of apps with support for Android software.

Some sources suggested that Android apps could be supported by Windows 10 and Windows Phone 10, and while this could indeed sound like a very good plan, Microsoft clearly needs to play its cards right to make sure that developers are still interested in creating apps for Windows.
