Microsoft Research is currently developing a new note-taking app that might provide more advanced functionality than the existing solutions do, and that will be available on both mobile devices and smartphones.

Twitter user @h0x0d has come across a new project started by the research division of Microsoft and part of Microsoft Garage, but for the moment, there’s still no official announcement coming from the company itself.

Codenamed Plumbago, this new project seems to be a more advanced note-taking solution that could mix the current features of OneNote and drawing app Fresh Paint, both of which are available separately in the store.

In the official description of the app, Microsoft says the following:

“With Plumbago, you can take great looking notes easily. Whether you're writing, sketching ideas, or doodling designs, Plumbago offers the tools you need to easily capture them.”

At first glance, the concept seems to be similar to OneNote, so you can create notebooks and take notes with more advanced drawing and marking tools, including pencils, highlighters, different tool sizes, lines, shapes, and pictures. The app seems to be optimized for the touch as well, as you’ll be able to adjust handwriting smoothing level and drawing tools. Keyboards, however, will be supported too.

At this point, the app doesn’t seem to be available for download, but depending on how well development goes, it could be released in the coming weeks.
