Microsoft releases new update for Skype Linux client

Microsoft continues work on Skype for Linux, and today the company has introduced a new version that brings several new tweaks, as well as bug fixes to correct issues reported in the previous releases.

Skype 1.5 for Linux Alpha is now available for download with improvements to voice messaging. At the same time, Microsoft explains that audio should work correctly for this feature after many people complained of bugs when trying to use it.

Additionally, mojis now work with audio too while the new version also brings improvements to the presence status icon sizes in the tray, but only on some distributions. Microsoft hasn’t said which distributions are getting this tweak, though, so it’s up to users to discover it, but better experience should be available for the majority of distros, anyway.

Microsoft also adds that, starting with version 1.5, “you can silence notification sound and turn off messaging notifications completely in Settings,” but also that, in this update, it “disabled the ability to drag & drop a URL into Skype which opens the browser in the application.”

Some other unnamed fixes are also available, including refinements to YouTube video playback in a conversation, so if you’re a Skype user on Linux, this update is really worth installing.

Don’t forget, however, that this release is still part of the alpha development stage, so bugs and performance issues are still very likely as you use the app.

Thanks for the tip, 11 11!
