Microsoft Studio supports “Hey Cortana” to resume from sleep

Microsoft has just released an update for the Surface Studio that makes it possible to wake up the device by simply calling personal assistant Cortana by name.

The latest firmware update, which shipped on April 19, bumps Realtek Semiconductor Corp. driver for Realtek High Definition Audio (SST) to version 6.0.1.8061, enabling wake on voice from modern standby.

So after installing this latest update on a Surface Studio that runs the Windows 10 Creators Update, all you have to do to wake the device is shout “Hey, Cortana” and then wait.

What’s important to know is that this feature does not work for a full shutdown, but only when the Surface Studio is in standby. But whereas “Hey, Cortana” previously worked to turn on the screen when the device was already running, it can now get you back to the desktop from a lower power sleep mode.

The new firmware update is shipped via Windows Update, so make sure that you check for new versions as soon as possible if you want to get this functionality on the Surface Studio.

A reboot is also required to complete the install, and this means that you need to save your work before launching the update process.

The Surface Studio is Microsoft’s all-in-one PC that was launched last fall, and just like the rest of the Surface lineup, it’s getting firmware updates regularly, as work on new feature completes.
