Third-party alternatives can also be used in this regard, with Desktop Tools being a suitable example, being fitted with a few extra controls apart from clock and calendar.

The application doesn’t even have to be installed in order to function, and is good to go from the moment download is done. This allows it to be carried around on a thumb drive to use on both your work and home computers, without worrying that stability is affected, since registry entries remain intact.

It bundles several components to show the time in a configurable section, a calendar, as well as a few basic system operations. As such, shutting down the PC, restarting, and logging off become available at your fingertips through dedicated options. Sadly, you can’t add more power options to the list.

The calendar is clean and simple, letting you easily navigate through content. Unfortunately, the application isn’t fitted with a reminder tool to use with the calendar, or even the possibility to set up an alarm, especially since there’s a clock there too.

However, the clock is based on an online service, so you need to be connected to the Internet at all times. It comes in several size specifications, as well as a few color schemes, which change at the press of a button.

Truth be told, the application looks rough, with elements chaotically arranged in the main window. Although it can be resized, elements don’t adapt to the new specifications, which is rather frustrating, considering it takes up quite a bit of desktop space.

All things considered, Desktop Tools is not really what you expect to find, with a rough visual design and not really any innovation brought to your desktop. It takes a disturbingly large amount of desktop space, while resizing not having any effect, and might make you consider looking for alternatives after the first few seconds in.
