Keeping track of how you spend your time can be done with a myriad of solutions. Tons of applications allow for time management, task planning, or any other related aspects. If you are not so keen on counting every second, you might want to check out Grandfather Fox. This Firefox add-on emulates a grandfather clock — a large clock usually mounted atop of a wooden tower-like structure, mostly known for its somber and echoing chimes.

Just like its physical counterpart, Grandfather Fox will let you know an hour has passed with the help of its chimes. Yes, chimes, as the developer put a handful of other sounds, not only the original sound such a clock would generate. You can swap to Clock Tower, Cuckoo, Clock, Multiple Beeps, or Single Beep chimes.

Test out each chime by accessing the add-on's options menu. A slider for calibrating chime volume is at your disposal, along with a Listen button for testing out the sounds. The timezone can be changed to better fit your routine.

Grandfather Fox covers a 12-hour span. By default, the assigned chime will start making noise right when the hour changes. Knowing the exact moment when an hour has passed might be handy in multiple situations, not only personal time tacking. With a bit of ingenuity, one can use custom chimes to highlight specific parts of the day. For example, you can start the morning with a cock-a-doodle-do and close the day with a wolf howl or whatever sound effect is needed. However, acquiring sound effects falls on you and you alone, as the add-on provides no such items.

Grandfather Fox is a neat little project that aims to inform the user about each passing hour, deploying click chimes whenever the case, or allowing you to come up with your alerts.
