Black is a handy piece of software that can help individuals easily manage their directories and files with the help of a multiple-pane system.

The program comes in the form of a ZIP file, which means that you need to extract the contents. When this process is completed, you simply have to double click the EXE file in order to run it, as it does not require installation. This means it can easily be copied to any location on the hard drive or even to a portable device like a USB flash drive, thus enabling you to use Black on any computer that you have access to.

In addition to that, since installation is not a prerequisite, the Windows registry and the Start menu/screen are not going to be updated with new entries.

Although the interface is a bit outdated, this software utility can be easily used by any type of person, no matter their previous experience with the IT world.

All the files and folders you have on a partition can be arranged in ascending or descending order according to the alphabet, type, size, attributes or date. Hidden elements can be shown and the number or parallel panes can be changed from two to four.

The useful “drag and drop” feature is incorporated in the application and selecting multiple items can be done by simply right clicking on them.

In order to enhance usability, the software utility also integrates shortcuts to My Computer, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Map Network Drive and System Registry. Moreover, keyboard shortcuts are available for each and every action that can be taken, such as F2 for renaming, F5 for copying and Shift+F4 for creating a file. The only drawback here is the fact that these shortcuts cannot be customized.
