Gmail is still one of the most popular email services in the world, not only thanks to the virtually unlimited storage capacity, but also as a result of the improvements Google has made in the last few years.

But using the web-based interface all the time isn’t exactly a comfortable way of taking advantage of its great features, so users are always looking for new software solutions supposed to bring Gmail right on their desktops.

Such is the case of Gmail Notifier Plus, a simple application that does just that, it lets you know once a new email message arrives in your Gmail inbox.

This is not an email client, it’s just a notifier, so you won’t be able to manage your inbox from the desktop. Instead, you will be alerted every time there’s a new message in there, so you can connect to your account through the same old-fashioned web-based interface.

Gmail Notifier Plus quietly sits in the System Tray or on the taskbar if you’re using Windows 7 and animates the icon as soon as the new message reaches the inbox.

There’s no interface per se, but a tiny settings menu that let you configure the account, choose the interval to automatically check for new message and decide whether to use a sound notification or not.

We’ve tested the app on Windows 7 and it worked flawlessly and, to be honest, the email preview it shows when clicking on the taskbar icon can easily take the place of any traditional email client.

So all in all, Gmail Notifier Plus is a nice and simple way of getting in touch with a Gmail account, and since it’s free and so light on computer resources, it’s just the way things should be with a decent email notifier.
