Webcam Capture

Webcams have a variety of uses, from working with communication programs and streaming images, to acting as a recording device, or even a security device. Webcam Capture is an application that allows users to use their webcam to both record images and set up a time interval, to record several frames after a repeating set period of time.

Webcam Capture's interface is essentially a window that displays what the webcam is viewing, with only a toolbar as additional features. Something like a sidebar with a few extra options would be greatly appreciated, with options like mirroring the image and adjusting the visuals on display and adjustable straight away.

The application includes multiple options, but they are hidden away in menus and the interface suffers for it. The window is expandable which is the only advantage to it, since nothing blocks the view of the camera or impedes it in anyway.

The main idea of Webcam Capture is the ability to turn a webcam into a security camera. Users can arrange the camera to record at specific intervals, recording a few frames then stopping, then resuming again. The interval feature is to limit the file size that the application automatically saves. Unfortunately, Webcam Capture only supports one webcam at a time, which limits its security value and keeps it small scale.

The security feature of Webcam Capture is further backed up by the automated FTP option, recordings are automatically compressed and emailed to a specific address. The program contains several other options, like the low light boost and color boost, with an additional anti flicker setting. Webcam Capture could easily provide more options, including several effects and filters, but for its professional purpose, the limited style doesn't interfere.

Webcam Capture performs a simple function and does it reasonably well. There is room for improvement in all areas, in both features and options, even design. The basic, simplistic nature of the program limits its potential, especially since its main function is limited to only one camera, yet wants to be a security program.
