Audiotools is a software that can record from cassettes and create CDs and MP3s collections.

Traditional sound recorders such as Sound Recorder record to memory and then allow you to save the results to disk.

This means that the amount of audio you can record is limited to the amount of memory you have - at CD quality in stereo, you can record about 90 seconds in each 16Mb of spare memory. These programs rarely use virtual memory, in order to maintain compatibility with the slowest systems which Windows is intended to run on.

Sample editors such as Cool Edit make a copy of a sound recording and then allow you to perform operations, one at a time on the recording before saving out the resultant file. These use temporary files during editing and for undo operations and can therefore take a lot of hard drive space and time.

Neither of these approaches is particularly convenient for processing large quantities of audio for writing to CD or producing MP3 collections.

Audiotools allows you to record directly from your media, perform several processes on the sound recording and write the results straight to disk. It can also process existing files in a variety of formats, including support for semi-traditional visual editing if desired. CD's can be ripped or burned subject to the presence of compatible hardware.
