First, you have to configure a server that you want to connect to. This requires a valid address for the given server and a bunch of other data, such as your nickname, your alternative nickname, a port and a display name for your server.

After you've connected to a server, and your connection appears to be stable, you can join various rooms, according to your interests and preferences (that's where the chatting really takes place).

If you know the name of the room, you can access it by typing the "/join" command in the console followed by the room's name. You can also use the "?" button if you find the console confusing.
