FileBackupper Portable

FileBackupper Portable is a small piece of software designed to help you backup and synchronize your files and folders.

As its name clearly states, this is a portable application, which means that you do not have to install it on your computer to get the most out of it.

Since there is no installation process, the utility does not create registry entries and can run on any computer directly from external storage devices without problems.

First things first, in order to run this application, oddly enough, you need to make sure that you do not run the application as administrator.

The basic principle of FileBackupper Portable is the following: you need to drag and drop your source and target directories in their designated fields. Then, you need to simulate the backup operation and, after you analyze the status of each file with the help of very small and representative icons, you can complete the process by executing it.

While its principle might seem simple and straightforward, calling this application anything else than counter-intuitive would be an overstatement. There are two main reasons for this, the former being the outdated and rough around the edges interface, and the latter being its complicated workflow.

Regarding the interface, while it may look straightforward, it shows a lack of attention with most of its details, starting from the graphic representation of folders and buttons and finishing with the obscure and hard to comprehend drag and drop fields.

But, by far the most frustrating problem with FileBackupper Portable is the backup process. Yes, you can somewhat customize the backup modes for both the source and target directory, but the icons used to represent the actions require a fair bit of studying before you can fully understand them. Still, you at least get the option to choose from two default backup modes available.

It is partly the same story with the feature that takes care of including and excluding files or folders for your backups. You need to drag and drop whatever you want included or excluded in the designated fields. To view if the effect has taken place, simply simulate the process all over again.

Every way you look at it, FileBackupper Portable is simply not an efficient app for file synchronization and backup purposes. Its workflow is counter intuitive, its interface shows a great lack of attention to details and it is simply not well suited for drag and drop actions.

Lastly, the application showed some consistency problems as well, as it did not present itself as being very stable on our testing machines with the latest version of Windows.

Not to say that the app does not work, but users who want a fast software solution for file backup and synchronization are advised to look elsewhere.
