Media Crawler provides you with a file system crawling application capable of extracting metadata information from various files, map it to internal schemas and store it in a database. Based on the Eclipse RCP platform, this program is intended to help programmers manage locally stored multimedia files and documents.
The application features an intuitive interface, where you can easily create a new database to work with and proceed to indexing the files in the target folder. You can create various search conditions and execute the query to generate the results.
The main GUI displays all the multimedia files in a structured manner, allowing you to annotate and organize items in groups. The metadata is automatically extracted from each file and additional data can be imported from CSV files.
Media Crawler provides support for various file types, such as Word documents (DOC and DOCX), Excel spreadsheets (XLS and XLSX), FLV and MOV videos, FLAC files, MP3 and WAV audio files, JPEG pictures, plain text files (TXT) and PDF documents.
The program comes with five schemas that allow you to organize the metadata of each file. The most basic one includes common fields that apply to all supported formats, while the other four comprise specific fields, depending on the file type. These schemas can describe audio, video, images and documents, but additional ones can be easily added.
The 'Smart Folders' section enables you to generate categories based on executing a query, while the 'Timeline' section generates a graphical view representing the relation between all the objects.
During our testing, the application crashed a few times, but overall, everything worked fine.
Media Crawler offers you a comprehensive platform designed to help you manage metadata of various file formats. Based on Eclipse, it shouldn't pose any problem to those who are familiar with this development environment.
