What's new in WinFIG 6.0 Beta 1:
- WinFIG can now read and write files with UTF-8 (Unicode) encoding enabling it to save files to paths named with special characters. Right now that is an incomplete feature, because the file export via fig2dev is still lacking Unicode capabilities. It works on Linux and Mac, but the Windows needs code changes, which I will do later.
- A new preferences page for adding paths to the PATH variable. That’s particularly useful if GhostScript or latex commands cannot be found by WinFIG. There is a useful default value for the Mac version. Windows and Linux users can leave the field empty in most cases.

Quick setup and familiar GUIInstalling the app is a fast and easy task. As previously mentioned, the interface is user-friendly and resembles similar CAD products. However, WinFIG does not put too much emphasis on visual appeal.
Rich toolbox with configuration settingsThe toolbox lets users create circles and ellipses by specifying the radius or diameter, splines or closed splines by setting the control points, along with interpolated or closed interpolated splines, in addition to rectangulars, polygons, polylines and arcs.
It is also possible to add text, arrow heads, pictures from files, together with tangents and normals to shapes, flip or rotate objects in the drawing, and so on. Each shape comes with its own set of attributes which can be later configured. For example, it is possible to adjust the depth, line width, line style and colors (among others) for rectangulars.
Create smart links between objectsAny mistakes can be undone and later redone. What's more, the app includes a feature that automatically looks for possible connections between objects to create smart links. Users may view a color palette, modify grid and metrics options (e.g. zoom and scaling, rules), as well as view object libraries. Projects can be exported to a wide array of file types, including Bitmap, Gerber, Metafile, PDF, EPS and SVG.
Evaluation and conclusionThe application has a good response time and minimal impact on CPU and RAM. We have not come across any unpleasant surprises throughout our evaluation, since it did not freeze, crash or pop up error messages. All in all, WinFIG comes packed with some handy features for creating CAD drawings.
