Every file in your computer has a unique digital signature used to identify it and verify its integrity. There are multiple types of file hashes and one of the most popular ones is MD5, a widely used cryptographic hash function with a 128-bit hash value.
MD5 Calculator is a small application that allows you to easily view the MD5 hash information for any file on your computer. Simplicity is the key word for MD5 Calculator, as its interface consists of an 'Open button' that allows you to browse for the desired file and the empty field where the 16 character hexadecimal value is displayed.
Using the application could not be easier. You just have to open the desired file or use the 'Drag and Drop' function and the application generates the numeric representation of its contents.
The program is capable of handling both small and large files. The tests showed that a 400 MB file was processed in less than 10 seconds. In all this time, you can monitor the progress counter. The generated MD5 hash can easily be copied to the clipboard just by double clicking on it.
In comparison to similar programs, MD5 Calculator has some disadvantages. Probably the most important one is that you cannot use it to compare two different files.
While it allows you to calculate the checksum of huge files in a relatively short time, you cannot process more than one file at once. Furthermore, there is other software from the same category that can display multiple hash types at the same time for a certain file.
Nevetheless, MD5 Calculator is a lightweight program that does its job easy and fast. It is a useful tool if you just need to find out the MD5 hash information of files. Drag and drop the desired file and that's it.
