Softpedia Editor's Review for Windows Virtual PC

    EDITOR'S RATING:

Allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation

Written by Alexandru Pintilie on March 8th, 2012

Windows Virtual PC provides you with Microsoft's virtualization environment to run multiple operating systems at the same time on your PC. Although it does not run on versions of Windows earlier than Windows 7, it does a great job when running numerous virtual machines of Windows XP, Vista and even 7 on PCs with enough system memory to support them all. While its official requirements are not that high, we recommend at least a dual-core processor for the best experience.

The application virtualizes the hardware of your computer, from CPU, RAM, VGA to Sound card and Network adapter. Originally, Virtual PC was a Macintosh application, released in 1997. The first Windows version of the software saw daylight back in 2001. Its developer, Connectix, has later sold the technology to Microsoft in 2003. Just one year later, the Redmond-based company released its first iteration of Virtual PC. It could run on Windows 2000 / XP Professional, XP Tablet PC Edition and Server 2003 Standard.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 runs as a host on Windows XP, Vista and Server 2003 and has gone from beta stage in October 2006 to official release in February 2007. You can now view virtual machines on multiple monitors and render Aero effects through Remote Desktop Connection from an Aero-enabled Windows Vista host. Its Service Pack 1 update comes with increased maximum resolution up to 2048x1920 as well as support for 16:9 resolutions.

Microsoft decided to let go of some of the features from Virtual PC 2007 in Windows Virtual PC. Some of the most notable are the lack of drag-and-drop sharing, support for parallel ports or direct sharing of folders between host and guest. New features are also added and they consist of `USB support and redirection`, `Seamless application publishing and launching`, `Support for multithreading`, `Smart card redirection` and `Integration with Windows Explorer`.

Windows Virtual PC also provides you with the Windows XP Mode. This package includes a pre-installed copy of Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. The Integration features of this software comprise `Mouse cursor sharing`, `Host-initiated shutdown`, `Time synchronization`, `Process responsiveness monitoring`, `Dynamic screen resolution` as well as Audio / Clipboard / Printer / Smart card or File sharing.

While Microsoft's Windows Virtual PC is not as complex as WMware Workstation or Oracle's VM VirtualBox, it does a good job in helping you establish a friendly climate for your additional operating systems.

    Windows Virtual PC description

Here are some key features of "Windows Virtual PC":

    Configurability:
    · After installing Virtual PC, you can configure it to suit your requirements. Virtual PC has a number of settings that control how the product interacts with the physical computer, allocates resources, and so on

    Easy installation:
    · Virtual PC is simple to install. Any administrator can run the Virtual PC guided setup program, and installation doesn't require a reboot. The first time Virtual PC starts, it guides you through the process of creating the first virtual machine

    Standardization:
    · Configure and test upgrades and installations on virtual machines, and then you can deploy throughout your company a standard configuration that avoids problems caused by minor differences between hardware platforms

    Convenience:
    · Users switch between operating systems as easily as they switch between applications. They simply click the window containing the virtual machine. They can pause individual virtual machines so they stop using CPU cycles on the physical computer. They can also save virtual machines to disk and restore them at a later time. The restoration process normally takes a few seconds-much faster than restarting the guest operating system

    Host integration:
    · Users can copy, paste, drag, and drop between guest and host. Virtual PC provides additions that you install in a guest operating system to enable this functionality

    Requirements:

    · An x86-based or an x64-based computer with a 400 MHz or faster (1 GHz recommended) processor with L2 cache. Virtual PC supports the use of AMD Athlon/Duron, Intel Celeron, Intel Pentium II, Intel Pentium III, Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core Duo, and Intel Cor
    · CD-ROM or DVD drive
    · Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution monitor recommended
    · Keyboard and Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device
    · For host disk space and memory, refer to the following table to determine the minimum required by the host operating system. This disk space is only a starting point in determining how much disk space you will need

    Granular drive sharing:
    · In the settings on the virtual machine, you can select specific host computer drives to share with the virtual machine.

Manage USB devices with virtual applications:
    · While running virtual applications, you can manage USB devices by using the Virtual Applications icon on the task bar.

    Windows XP Mode tutorial:
    · A Windows XP Mode RC tutorial, which introduces the product features, is displayed during Windows XP Mode Setup.

    Jump list for virtual applications:
    · Right clicking on the virtual application icon for Windows XP Mode, on Windows 7 taskbar, displays a jump list that allows one to easily launch virtual applications from the taskbar.

    Faster Windows XP Mode Setup:
    · Windows XP Mode Setup completes more quickly than in Windows XP Mode Beta.

    Compact differencing disks:
    · You can compact the differencing disks to decrease the file size.

Ability to install Windows XP optional components:
    · Windows XP optional components can be installed in Wind...
