Disk Activity Indicator is a simple software utility that can come to the rescue in this particular case.

This lightweight and portable application provides a software alternative to the HDD flickering led. It runs in the system tray only, displaying a green icon, very similar to a hardware led, that blinks every time the monitored hard drive is doing something, be it writing or reading activity.

Just like a regular HDD led, Disk Activity Indicator pulses each time it detects that the logical or a physical disk it supervises performs a task. In other words, this application provides a system tray indicator for the hard disk activity that can easily replace a missing HDD led on a machine.

Leaving aside its main role as a replacement for an HDD led, Disk Activity Indicator is also a system information provider.

It displays details regarding the connected drives, such as the vendor ID, the product revision, and its serial number, as well as additional info about the disk geometry: cylinders, the number of tracks, sectors, and bytes per cylinder, or the disk size.

Disk Activity Indicator is not a complex app, but it comes as a response to a problem that many technicians complain about when working with a specific computer or laptop model, namely the lack of a hard disk light indicator. Configuring it is easy, as you can select the target logical or physical disk from the "Settings" window and configure the blink duration.
