New in Cubase Pro 9.5.10 (Dec 12, 2017)

  • Zoning 2.0: Speed up your workflow:
  • Three new sections made their way into the right zone to enhance the flow in your work. The new file browser lets you browse, preview and import your media files in your project without leaving the window; the new metering section in the right zone shows the master and loudness meters to have a lock on your mix at any time; and then there’s the Control Room, providing direct access to your cue and monitor mixes.
  • Automation editing just got curves:
  • Cubase 9.5 introduces ultra-precise automation curves for creating and editing smooth transitions, allowing you to go creative with musical build-ups and providing detailed automation lanes — all this while keeping mouse clicks to a minimum. One might think that a streamlined workflow possibly comes at the expense of accuracy. But no, not at all! Even the automation of tracks controlled by VCA faders will incorporate all automation data of the connected tracks and will remain 100% on target.
  • More Metronome:
  • You want the click to follow your signature shift? The new Metronome follows your lead no matter where you’re heading! Compose custom click patterns with up to four different accent levels in the new Click Pattern Editor, and assign several different patterns to the Signature Track. Load your own click sounds or select one of the many pre-installed sounds. Every metronome helps you keep in time, but the new metronome in Cubase 9.5 does this so much more effectively.
  • 64-bit mixing engine:
  • Taking your sound to new heights:
  • Get your mixing down the line — with the new pristine 64-bit floating-point mixing engine you will no longer need to compromise when it comes to quality, precision and realism. The advanced audio engine calculates your summing, mixing and effects processing with double-precision accuracy, performing each task with the utmost level of detail, dynamics and transparency.
  • More inserts now with flexible pre/post fader:
  • By doubling the number of insert slots for VST effects on each track, Cubase 9.5 expands your creative horizon, inviting you to experiment with rich effect combinations and plug-in chains. Whether you want to insert your VST effects before or after the fader, the new flexible insert section lets you dynamically adjust the position of the separator and gives you full control of your signal flow.
  • New looks for Vintage Compressor, Tube Compressor and Magneto III:
  • Three of the most acclaimed VST processors available to Cubase have received a fresh overhaul. The Vintage Compressor, the Tube Compressor and Magneto III tape saturator shine with redesigned user interfaces and workflow-oriented improvements that bring out the best in each of them.
  • Direct Offline Processing:
  • Ideal for frequently used processes:
  • Extend your creative potential with the improved workflow of event-based offline processing. Apply any kind of process offline in a VST plug-in chain for one or multiple selected event — with the feel of real-time effects — without the CPU load. This way you can keep your MixConsole clean but at the same time have paved the way for further non-destructive changes.
  • HALion Sonic SE 3 feat. FLUX wavetable synth:
  • The new FLUX wavetable synthesizer library for HALion Sonic SE combines top-notch sound quality and the latest HALion technology with an engaging user interface. The collection of 100 cutting-edge presets for electronic music productions includes leads, basses, pads and effects. All patches are based on a library of more than 70 exclusively designed waves that can also be used to create your own sounds and patches
  • Automation range tool:
  • The new Range Tool lets you edit your automations faster, easier and more convenient. Create a selection on an automation lane and edit segments by simply dragging them without having to create any additional automation markers. The Range Tool adjusts the level, creates ramps and scales the automation in either absolute or relative mode — just like that!
  • Adapt to Zoom: A clever capability:
  • New to this point update, Adapt to Zoom helps you to stay in the flow in case you should be constantly zooming in and out of your Cubase project. Zooming out decreases the grid snap level so that the editing level remains effective. Zooming in increases the grid snap level for those surgical procedures at the ground level of your project. Adapt to Zoom will always adjust the grid automatically to your zoom level, allowing you to focus on your work without distractions.
  • Good-bye and hello video engine:
  • A new, modern video engine that bade farewell to the QuickTime technology before it was introduced to Cubase 9.5 supports the most relevant codecs, as well as external video cards. As with every new engine, certain adjustments will still have to be made, and we want to keep you posted on further developments made to the new video engine, so watch this space.
  • Softube Console 1 supports Cubase Available soon:
  • Sweden and Germany — two countries come together to celebrate the deep integration of the Console 1 from our friends at Softube with Cubase. You can now select tracks and control various track parameters like volume, pan or sends through Softube’s beautiful hardware controller.
  • Sampler Track enhancements:
  • The recently introduced Sampler Track has undergone some changes that will enhance your workflow significantly. Drag any MIDI part in the Sampler Control and start experimenting with the instantly rendered audio file. And experiment you may! You can compare the different settings you make with the convenient A/B mode, safe in the knowledge that its undo/redo capability will always allow you to return to safer ground.
  • Get inspired by Production Presets:
  • Cubase 9.5 comes with Production Presets to inspire you when it’s needed and to help you finish your mix when things need to get done. Stunning new FX chain presets for all kinds of instrument and vocal tracks will lend a fresh twist to all your productions. The brand-new mastering track presets is designed for different genres and productions and can be used on the master bus or group channels to help you get your tracks to a professional level.

  • Render in Place:
  • The “Render Settings” window has been cleaned up with all options integrated into one window page (the previous 2nd tab “Format” is obsolete).
  • It is now possible to render tracks in either mono or stereo: For the render options “Dry (Transfer Channel Settings)” and “Channel Settings” the resulting audio tracks keep the formats of their source tracks. A mono track results in a mono track. For the render options “Complete Signal Path” and “Complete Signal Path + Master FX” the resulting audio file format is determined by the output channel of the source track. A mono track, routed to a stereo bus, results in stereo audio files.
  • Automation:
  • The option “Automation Follows Events” now takes trimming of events into account.
  • Additionally it reduces the amount of redundant automation points when moving events with this option enabled.
  • Editing automation points or inaccurate writing of automation data can result in situations where the values briefly return to their initial value, visible as spikes in the automation curve or as jumping faders. In the Automation Settings, you can set a Spike Detection Range from 0 to 200 ms to adjust the detection window in which these spikes are found and treated by Cubase (Cubase Pro only).
  • Chord Pads:
  • When working with Chord Pads, you can now set up MIDI or instrument tracks to use “No Player”. This passes unchanged through MIDI data from your remote keyboard, which is useful for all tracks not suited to play chords at all (such as drum tracks). You no longer need to explicitly disable or close the Chord Pads in such cases.
  • The Chord Assistant window now gives a hint when no chord has been referenced in order to get suggestions for other chords.
  • MixConsole:
  • The “Link Groups Settings” window now includes the option to have the channel selection as part of the link group (or not) which comes also very handy when working with VCA Faders (Cubase Artist / Pro only).
  • Workspaces:
  • You can determine the view of external projects when you open them in Cubase: In Preferences > General you have several options now for “Open Project in Last Used View” available to control the behavior (Cubase Artist / Pro only).
  • Groove Agent SE 4.2:
  • MIDI Output for Host Recording: Groove Agent SE is now able to send MIDI to Cubase in order to record MIDI notes.
  • Follow Host Transport: Activate “Follow Host Transport” and Groove Agent SE will start and stop with the transport in Cubase.
  • Alternate Loop: Alternate loop and reverse alternate loop are now available as new loop modes in the Sample Editor.
  • Live Mode on Dynamic FX: Compressor, Gate, Limiter and the Expander can know be switched into the low-latency mode.
  • Pitchbend Support: Pitchbend is now available in the controller lane of the Pattern Editor.
  • MIDI Channel for Pattern Pads: The Pattern Pads can be triggered using a dedicated MIDI channel.
  • Other Improvements:
  • When removing selected tracks Cubase asks for confirmation in case there is still event data on the tracks (or in TrackVersions).
  • From the File Menu you can now access “Save New Version” which was previously only available as a key command.
  • In VST Expressions > Expressions Maps > Remote Settings you can define to use either “Key Switches” as before or the new “Program Change Messages” option (Cubase Pro only).
  • When loadings projects in Cubase the application will prevent the ASIO port setup contained in the project file to override the ports currently in use for the Control Room, External Instruments and External FX. You may want to check your Input/Output setup in the VST Connections window in case you have to deal with ports set to “Not Connected”.
  • The Export Audio Mixdown windows now offers dedicated options in avoid file name conflicts.

New in Cubase Pro 7.5.20 (Apr 9, 2014)

  • IMPROVEMENTS:
  • New Preference: Record-Enable allows MIDI Thru:
  • This new preference can be found in Preferences > Record > MIDI and is enabled by default. Disabling it gives you the option to monitor MIDI tracks just like audio tracks: Record- enabled MIDI/instrument tracks “thru” MIDI data only if the Monitor button is enabled.
  • This helps eliminating doubled notes with record-enabled MIDI tracks. This preference should be disabled when recording MIDI data (e.g. with a MIDI drum set) on a track which should be played back with a VST instrument but is monitored via external MIDI sound generator while recording.
  • Please be aware that this preference is described incorrectly in the current “New Feature” PDF as “Deactivate MIDI Thru for Record Enable” and will be corrected as soon as possible.
  • TrackVersions: Delete Inactive TrackVersions:
  • There are two new commands in the TrackVersions menu to clean up a project of inactive TrackVersions. They remove all TrackVersions, which are not active or not in use in the current project. The “Delete inactive versions of selected tracks” command deletes TrackVersions of all selected tracks, while “Delete inactive versions of all tracks” deletes TrackVersions from the whole project without the need to select tracks first.
  • Control Room Improvements:
  • Monitor states are now saved and recalled per project instead of being stored globally.
  • A new preference controls the Talkback behavior in Playback/Record mode (Preferences > VST > ControlRoom > “Auto Disable Talkback Mode”).
  • Graphical layout and various elements have been re- structured for better accessibility, and the main Control Room section can now be displayed together with the metering section.

  • More music:
  • Know your harmonies:
  • The new global Chord Track allows for easy working with chords within your Project window and provides transform and harmonize functions throughout the application. Cubase detects the harmony structure of your song and feeds back all chord and scale information to both MIDI and audio tracks processed with VariAudio. All tracks engaged to follow will automatically reflect any harmonic adjustments made with the Chord Track! Advanced voicing options are used to transform existing parts in a harmonically correct and ear-pleasing way.
  • Chords can be either entered manually with the mouse, by playing them on a MIDI keyboard, or generated automatically from existing MIDI parts in the project. You may even want to enter single notes and harmonize these later on with VariAudio — Chord Track lets you do all this.
  • Chord Track and Chorder MIDI plug-in:
  • Due to the tight integration, creating and printing lead sheets is just a matter of a few clicks. Now, you can drag-and-drop single or multiple chord events from the Chord Track to the Chorder MIDI plug-in or HALion Sonic or HALion Sonic SE.
  • Key Editor toolset:
  • And while the Chord Track with its many automatic mechanisms truly delivers what it promises, we built a toolset in the Key Editor’s inspector to paint in chords directly as MIDI notes in the Key Editor.
  • Intelligent composing assistance:
  • You don't have to be a musical genius to lay down beautiful harmonies — not when you're using Cubase 7. The powerful new Chord Assistant helps you to generate everything from simple pop to complex jazz chord sequences that just sound fabulous.
  • Want to specify both the first and final chords but have no clue how to get there? This, also, is possible in Cubase 7. The Chord Assistant lists chord suggestions from which you can choose — it's all just a click away.
  • Pure tuning for that extra punch:
  • Thanks to the Hermode tuning technology, the intonation of your synthesized notes are changed dynamically on the fly for utmost compatibility with well-tempered scales, while retaining a high degree of purity for third and fifth intervals. Especially when combining non-fixed-intonation instruments, like brass and woodwind, and fixed-intonation instruments, such as guitars and piano, entire orchestral arrangements sound immediately clearer and more brilliant than before.
  • Eliminating the compromises and strengthening the advantages of well temperament, Hermode intonation results in a clean and pure tuning that can definitely add unimagined punch and clarity to all kinds of electronic music as well!
  • Create your harmonies with VariAudio 2.0:
  • Since its introduction in Cubase 5, we've been waiting to push VariAudio a milestone further. For Cubase 7 we were back in the code yard and are now proud to present you with a lot more powerful VariAudio 2.0!
  • VariAudio 2.0:
  • The seamless integration with the newly introduced Chord Track ensures correct pitch to your harmonies at all times. This interaction also lets you harmonize your lead vocals in beautifully composed choral arrangements: the brilliant new spread function adds soprano, alt, tenor and bass voices on new tracks with by-the-book harmonic lead voicing.
  • Talking about multiple tracks, you’ll be glad to know that the days when you manually aligned editor windows under each other are finally over. Now you can smartly edit multiple VariAudio parts across multiple tracks within one editor only!
  • And let's not stop here: the VariAudio vocal toolset has further been refined with an enhanced note-detection algorithm, leaving really no more wishes open. And yes, the popular autotuning effect is no big deal for VariAudio!
  • Go hybrid with HALion Sonic SE:
  • You asked for it and we listened: the new Hybrid Expansion for HALion Sonic SE boasts 300 pristine hybrid instrument sounds stocking up on natural pianos, breathing choirs, lush strings and moving analog-digital textures. The gorgeous rich and exciting tonal spectrums perfectly supplement HALion Sonic SE’s top-flight workstation library. Make the difficult choice from the greater good of having a plethora of star-like instruments, and dial them in on your next track!
  • 30 new drum kits for Groove Agent ONE:
  • For all you beat meddlers out there, we've added fresh new drum samples and patterns to Cubase 7 that'll contribute many a programming moment to savor. Beautifully created and recorded percussive sounds in 30 new drum kits grace the library of Groove Agent ONE, alongside 150 further intricately grooving MIDI Loop patterns — literally leaving no room for tranquil moments. All MIDI patterns were produced by Allen Morgan, whose artist credits include Taylor Swift, Nine Inch Nails and plenty others.
  • Thousands of MIDI construction loops:
  • Giving you the building blocks to create your own song in only a few steps, Cubase 7 boasts a smorgasbord of quality MIDI loops taken directly from Sequel. Each loop automatically loads the corresponding sounds from HALion Sonic SE, ranging from orchestral motives to rock riffs to just plain strange. It's all there, you just have to put it together. Arrange these loops within your song's project, and let the spotlight shine on your next track.

  • Here's a typical studio situation: it's 3 a.m., air con's just packed up, your client is expecting results and now you have to get the production finished fast. But it's this one guitar track you need to edit, tucked away in that 300-track project of yours… only where? From here, Cubase 7 helps you to spot tracks and channels with its comfortable search engine. Simply type in "guitar" and instantly receive a list of all tracks and channels that have "guitar" included in their name.
  • MemZap:
  • Think about this: you are editing a zoomed-in wave file and you need to jump to another part of your project only to return back to the starting point seconds later. Now imagine doing this several times in a row — but to save your sanity, Cubase 7 now features MemZap. This allows you to store the exact position and zoom factors of your project for recall and to hop between them whenever you like.

New in Cubase Pro 6.0.2.291 (May 4, 2011)

  • Edit faster with less clicks Drum editing deluxe
  • Developed in conjunction with recording professionals and top-flight studio drummers, Cubase 6 raises the bar for multitrack drum editing tasks on all levels. Incorporating an entire new transient and tempo detection, phase stable audio quantization and drum replacement functions, Cubase 6 offers a complete toolset to perfect the rhythm, feel and flavor of live-recorded drum tracks. Whether it is about non-destructively correct timing issues or changing the tempo of a drum performance seamlessly — a tight groove is just a few clicks away.
  • A new transient detection — to slice them all
  • Based on a state-of-the-art algorithm, Cubase 6 introduces a straightforward and intelligent transient detection function. Finding all drum hits is a breeze now, thanks to the intuitive preview feature and two specialized filters, called Peak and Beats. With this powerful tool on hand, you can detect single hits, rolls and ghost notes faster and more accurate than ever before. After the transients have been
  • detected they are merged across multiple tracks by taking user definable priority of individual tracks into account. The drumhits are then cut up and grouped together ready for detailed tweaking. In this way, copying that great fill from verse 2 to verse 1 is solved with minimum effort: select one, move them all.
  • The bass drum needs some extra punch? The snare drum doesn’t cut through the mix? With the new Hitpoint-to-MIDI function, it gets very easy to replace, double or enrich live-recorded drum sounds. When the transients have been detected, a single click on the Create MIDI Notes button creates a MIDI track containing a MIDI note for each single drum hit. From here, it’s up to you which sampler or synth you want to fuel with the note. A good choice would be the powerful Groove Agent ONE drum sampler, included in Cubase 6.
  • Advanced tempo detection
  • Cubase 6 features a newly developed tempo detection algorithm, which accurately and semi-automatically determines the tempo of any rhythmic audio material. This makes it easy to determine the tempo of a drum performance that has not been recorded to a metronome. The resulting tempo map can be used for to keep the dynamic feeling of natural tempo variations or to remove unwanted tempo changes quickly. Whatever rhythm is at hand, Cubase 6 will detect the tempo and match the track to a beat grid of your choice.
  • Click image to view animation Multitrack audio quantization
  • In Cubase 6 rhythmic audio material can be quantized just like any MIDI material, offering numerous possibilities to fix timing issues and to change the groove of live-recorded drums. To preserve phase relationships between tracks, the individual slices on all tracks are still grouped and moved at once. Cubase automatically creates cross-fades between slices to ensure seamless transitions between them and fill gaps that might be introduced during quantization. A few clicks, and all drum tracks are matched to the bass drum, snare or whatever source or sources are desired. With the Slice Rules you can decide which sources will get a higher priority during slicing.
  • Conjure the perfect takeClick image to view animation Cubase 6 comes with a new Lane Track concept for lightning fast multitake comping. When recording several takes, Cubase instantly creates a Lane Track for each take. From here, it’s just a short way to perfection: Simply swipe across the best parts of a take and Cubase automatically creates a master take that contains all selected parts. For comfortable comping, each Lane Track sports a solo button and full editing functionality — building the perfect take has never been that easy.
  • Bring together what belongs togetherThe new Track Edit Groups tool refines the work with multitrack recordings in Cubase. This new function allows multitrack editing with single-click actions. Whether it is guitar, bass or ambient recording, professional sound engineers mix several signals to get the best results. When recording a guitar for example, it is common to record signals from different amps or microphone types on separate tracks. With Track Edit Groups activated, related tracks are tied together and can be edited at once, making this new feature a huge time-saver.
  • The revolution unfolds: VST Expression 2 Maximum expression on every note
  • With the simultaneous release of Cubase 6 and VST 3.5, Steinberg is taking MIDI editing to a whole new level. Note Expression is the new smart way to assign, create and edit multiple controller values directly on single note-level — all in a single handy graphical interface.
  • The perfect choice for demanding orchestral arrangements and creating unique sound effects, Note Expression allows controller values to be drawn directly onto single note events in the Key Editor. Because each individual note event contains its own set of controller data, even polyphonic sounding notes can now be dynamically controlled — fully independent from each other. This way, composers can access controller information such as volume or pitch bend in one place, making it easy to scale, shift or delete several values at once. Best of all, when moving or copying a note event, the associated controller data will follow as well. Each single note event and controllers are treated as one unit, which makes working with instrument articulations faster and more intuitive than ever before. Breaking the traditional MIDI limitations opens up entirely new creative possibilities: Imagine a chord containing different filter sweeps, volume curves or dynamic expressions for every single note!
  • Make it dynamic
  • The VST Expression set has been extended and now also sports dynamics in the Key Editor. From pianissimo to crescendo and fortissimo — all dynamics from the Score Editor are available in the new Articulations/Dynamics Lane in the Key Editor.
  • When using VST 3.5-compatible instruments, you get instant acoustic feedback from parts that contain dynamics. What’s more, the Dynamics Mapping feature allows very fine adjustments for up to three controllers for dynamics, including velocity, volume and freely assignable MIDI CC.
  • Click image to view animation From ultra-realistic instrument sounds to the most unexpected sonic spheres, VST 3.5 and Note Expression enable a whole new creative approach to composition and sound design. And it doesn’t stop here. Use VariAudio together with Note Expression to bring lifeless MIDI recordings to life. With the Extract MIDI feature inside the Sample Editor you can make snapshots of the pitch and volume curves of monophonic audio recordings and paste that information into MIDI notes!
  • VST Expression map on call
  • VST 3.5 compatible instruments such as the included HALion Sonic SE, as well as HALion Sonic and the HALion Symphonic Orchestra VST Sound Instrument Set can automatically transfer the articulation setup of each individual instrument sound to a VST Expression Map — a great function that will speed up the setup of VST Expression maps dramatically.
