This month’s update introduces the ability to search raw EDR log data. In the past, you could only search detection-related data using osquery. Now, you’ll be able to search all EDR data, including historical data stored in Emsisoft’s cloud.
You can use custom views in the Threat Hunting panel to search for specific process starts, registry changes, and more, making it easier than ever to pinpoint when and why a particular event occurred and to contextualize other data. You could, for example, trace the execution history of a particular file across all devices in your Workspace in order to work out any potential impact.
In addition, we’ve altered the way EDR data is processed at the device-level in order to minimize the performance impact on endpoints.
As usual, the update also includes multiple small fixes and improvements to ensure that our products continue to provide you with the best possible protection and the best possible experience.

Identify sooner. Respond faster:
With this month’s update, we’re introducing significant enhancements to our endpoint detection and response (EDR) module, making it easier than ever to identify potential threats and determine which ones should be prioritized.
New incidents overview with smart threat severity classification:
The ‘Incidents’ panel in your workspace lists all potential threats, both those which were detected locally on endpoints and also those which were detected by Emsisoft’s cloud-based Behavior AI. With this update, the list will be grouped by specific threats, with each entry summarizing all alerts for every file or host, making it quick and easy to get an overview of what’s happened within your environment.
Additionally, the panel now also includes a ‘Severity’ column , with ratings ranging from ‘Malicious’, ‘Likely malicious’, ‘Suspicious’, ‘Notable’ to ‘Unwanted.’ The rating is determined by smart algorithms that take into account the protection layer which detected the threat, a technical analysis of a file, the frequency of specific actions and events, as well as the reputation of a file, and more. The rating helps you quickly hone in the most important items – namely, ‘Malicious’ and ‘Likely Malicious’ detections with are shown in red and orange respectively – and take appropriate action.
Depending on your security requirements, you may want to investigate all alerts on a prioritized basis, or hide certain severity levels from the dashboard completely. The choice is yours. Our objective is to present the information in a way that will enable you to process it in the most time-efficient manner.
Advanced threat details view with timeline and execution trees:
This is the core of Emsisoft’s EDR. We have completely restructured the threat details panel and included a brand new timeline feature which shows all recorded relevant events and alerts.
The panel also lets you jump through all recorded execution trees of a threat on every devices on which it was found. You can use this to trace back to the origins of an attack.
The main purpose of the threat details panel is to provide help you answer the most important questions:
What happened? What methods were used and what did the threat aim for in terms of malicious activity? Which behavior types were recorded, including exploiting of vulnerabilities, and potential lateral spread across your devices?
Where did it happen? Where did the action originate in the network? Which devices were involved and what was the attack vector? For example, did someone open an email attachment, or download and open a file, or was a vulnerability was exploited to execute code?
Who was responsible? In which user context was the file initially created? That may be a physical user or a system identity.
Emsisoft’s new threat details panel enables you to understand the nature of a threat, contain and remediate it, and take precautions to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Raw data browser:
Emsisoft Enterprise Security customers will also notice the new raw data browser at the bottom of the details panel. This shows all related events to a threat, from protection layer alerts, processes, file system and registry activity to networking events. You can drill down on each of the recorded events to find further related activity.

Windows 11 is coming soon: We’re ready:
The next major version of Microsoft Windows is just around the corner. Our Quality Assurance Team has tested our software on the latest preview version of Windows 11 and can confirm that all current Emsisoft protection products work as expected. We will continue to test upcoming beta versions of Windows 11 until the final release.
Just a reminder: support for old Windows versions has finally ended. As announced earlier, we no longer support legacy versions of Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Servers 2008 R2 and 2012, and no longer provide our software for 32 bit operating systems. This move reflects Microsoft’s main support timeline.
Announcement regarding email notifications:
The ability to receive real-time notifications by email is an important feature for security administrators who look after larger numbers of devices. Before we launched the Emsisoft Management Console, notifications could only be set directly in the endpoint protection software on the desktop. Later on, we added even more powerful notification features in the Management Console, including support for webhooks/APIs.
With this update, we would like to inform you that we’re going to phase out notifications that are set on the desktop. We believe this is the right move for multiple reasons:
It’s getting increasingly confusing for administrators to have multiple locations for features that essentially do the same thing. Moving notifications exclusively to the Management Console simplifies and eases overall usability.
Setting notifications desktop-side requires you to enter your SMTP account details for sending emails. We prefer to NOT have access to this information of yours for security reasons. The Management Console uses the Emsisoft mailing system to deliver notification emails safely.
How to migrate notifications:
If you currently use the email notifications feature in Emsisoft, either via the desktop application or via protection policies in the Management Console, please disable them now.
Go to your workspace settings page at the bottom of the Management Console menu on the left, scroll down to ‘Email notifications & webhooks’ and configure them as per your requirements.

New: Detection of zombies (aka abused script parsers and host processes)
There’s a recent ‘trend’ emerging in malware scene: hijacking host processes to load malicious code. Instead of running their own processes, these nasties execute via script parser programs that are meant to automate simple administrative tasks on the system. The Emsisoft Behavior Blocker can now clearly distinguish between actual malware processes and dozens of available script parsers that may have been hijacked.
Improved behavior-based detection of ransomware:
As predicted a number of times in the past, ransomware turned out to be one of the most dangerous online threats this year. Ransomware encrypts your personal files and requests a ransom of typically several hundred dollars to get the decryption password. Most of the latest ransomware specimens like Cryptowall or Cryptolocker make it impossible to crack their passwords which means victims either have to pay the ransom or lose their data forever. The built-in behavior blocker of Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Emsisoft Internet Security is now even better at interrupting ransomware attacks.
Smarter and quieter protection than ever:
While many malware behavior patterns often appear in legitimate programs, there is also a group that exclusively exists in malware. Our lab used that knowledge to define patterns that allow us to block attacks without even bothering you with block/allow decision dialogs. Emsisoft Version 11 can now quarantine these infections on its own. Additionally we have optimized the detection of hidden installations of malware and also improved the detection of malware that registers itself automatically every time you start your PC.
Improved rollout for business customers:
Business customers asked us to implement a way that allows them to test the latest software releases before they roll them out to their large networks. Therefore we have introduced a new update feed called “Delayed” that gives system administrators a bit of time to test new software versions. It uses a similar mechanism as Windows 10 updates.
Only in Emsisoft Internet Security: Enhanced firewall protection:
Emsisoft Internet Security 11 extends Emsisoft Anti-Malware with a firewall that hides your computer when connected to foreign networks. Plenty of detail improvements in version 11 reduce the potential attack vectors by trimming down network access to a controlled secure level, while the usage of the software remains easy and simple.
Protection from new threats means focusing on the latest versions of Windows:
Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Emsisoft Internet Security 11 don’t run on Windows XP and Vista anymore. Customers who still belong to a rapidly shrinking group of XP and Vista users will not receive the new version via online updates, but continue to get signature- and detection-updates for their version 10 until the officially announced support end in April 2016.
Rest assured, it’s not our intention to push our customers to buy a new computer, but we have to face reality here: Both XP and Vista lack significant security features in their core structure, which is holding us back from protecting users to the highest possible level. Imagine the best and most advanced available home security system that just can’t do its job because all doors and windows of your home are kept open for thieves all the time – and there is no way to close them. As Microsoft no longer creates patches for newly discovered security leaks, we believe it’s unethical to sell antivirus software that pretends to protect while it can’t effectively do so any longer.
Less stopping and starting: Emsisoft listens to customer feedback:
Our development team prides itself for fulfilling as many user wishes as possible. Therefore we have significantly reduced the number of annoying system reboots for software updates and also improved the performance of the cleaning engine while running third party software that is heavy on the system registry.
No detours – maximizing efficiency on today’s operating systems:
Warning – Geek language ahead:
Prior to version 10, Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Emsisoft Internet Security were compiled as 32 bit programs. Even on 64 bit Windows editions they ran as a 32 bit processes. That worked seamlessly, but requires quite a lot of extra code to switch between both platforms’ individual capabilities. In version 11 we have ended those detours by creating two standalone editions of our software for 32 and 64 bit Windows. That allows us to use available system resources more efficiently. Our installers contain both, so you don’t need to worry about getting the right one. Emsisoft version 11 automatically installs the correct edition based on your operating system.

Significantly improved scanning speed:
We looked hard at areas where we can take better advantage of modern hardware and where we can use limited hardware resources more efficiently, while improving the quality of detection even further. As a result, we have changed the way the dual-scan engine reads files from disk. It does not only use the full potential of fast SSD storage devices and multi-core processors, but also reads data in the most effective way for low memory usage now. On a reasonable fast PC that means: A typical scan for active infections now takes only 24 seconds where it used to take more than 13 minutes. A thorough scan of all files on a system drive now takes only six and a half minutes where it used to take half an hour before.
The “SCAN” section of the software was visually improved to make it even easier and straight forward to use. The new “Malware Scan” replaces what was previously known as “Smart Scan”. The option “Detail Scan” was removed in favor for a “Custom Scan” that uses the same default settings. The new scan types are available for quick access at the overview screen too.
Overhauled Scheduled Scans panel:
Version 10 now allows you to easily configure multiple scheduled scans. Scan tasks have received a vast amount of new settings to cover all thinkable conditions. For example, say you want to scan your whole computer each Friday after work at 5 PM. In case the PC has already been shut down, you want to repeat the missed scan on Monday morning. Additionally you may want to run a quick scan after each reboot, but be sure that the latest online updates are downloaded right before the scan. All of that can be flexibly configured now. Scans can be scheduled on short intra-daily intervals, on daily/weekly/monthly intervals, or right after events like PC startup or online updates. The scan type can be flexibily chosen, including custom scan settings with specific automated cleaning settings, and scans can run silently if preferred.
New Privacy settings panel:
The anti-malware testing agency AV-comparatives recently confirmed that Emsisoft is quite possible the most privacy conscious security software vendor around. For some useful features like the online lookup of programs during alerts to avoid false alerts it is required to submit a minimum of information in order to benefit from them, but you can always turn them off if you prefer. You can also optionally turn off the SSL-based server communication to convince yourself about the transferred information, using a http traffic logger.

Think of a combination of the Windows Task Manager with the power of the Emsisoft Behavior Blocker. The new process list shows which programs can be trusted and which may require further investigation to be absolutely sure. Results of the online- and offline-reputation-analysis allow you quickly narrow down the number of questionable programs to just a few. Extended file properties help you to identify threats. Bad programs can be quarantined or killed with just one click.
Improved online updates:
The new version optionally lets you know every time a software update is installed in the background. The update tile at the overview screen was simplified for improved usability.
Improved installation wizard:
The initial malware scan was moved from installer to the first run of the software for better cleaning functionality.
Fine tuning:
While the visual changes of the new version are somewhat limited, we focused more on getting the best out of the already awarded software. Dozens of bigger and smaller improvements have been applied under the hood. The user interface was simplified for better handling and improved at various locations for more speed.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware Version 5.0 incorporates major changes. The one that is most relevant to the user: The user interface has been greatly simplified. This allows PC beginners to immediately start working with the software because it is now much easier to use. The scanner has also been integrated into the main window and can now be started even faster than before. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is also very light on computer resources and now uses only about 20 MB RAM in normal guard operation.

A new file guard:
To ease the load on the system, the Anti-Malware background guard previously only started when files in the system were opened or executed. The new file guard in version 5 has been written anew from scratch and now also offers the optional ability to scan files immediately after downloading and when they are copied or moved.
Full support for Windows 7:
Anti-Malware 5 offers full support for Windows 7, including new functions specific to Windows 7.
100% x64 compatible:
Anti-Malware 5.0 works equally well without limitations on both 32 and 64 bit systems. This makes Anti-Malware 5 one of the first "complete" behavior-blockers for x64 systems.
Extended behavior analysis:
A new addition is recognition of manipulation of the system security policies. The false alert filter has been further refined and the design of the alert window has been optimized.
Improved self-protection:
The self-protection in Anti-Malware 5 has been greatly optimized. This prevents Malware programs from changing or disabling the protection program.
Improved cleaning:
The cleaning routines in the software have been greatly improved. This means that all Malware found by the program can also be reliably deleted.
