What's new in Microsoft Expression Blend 4.0.20901.0 SP1

Oct 18, 2010
  • Windows Phone support:
  • When you install the Windows Phone Development Tools, you can use the design tools in Expression Blend to create Windows Phone applications, including Windows Phone project and item templates, graphics and animation tools, behaviors, and sample data. Once you’ve created your Windows Phone application, you can build it and then preview it either in the Windows Phone emulatoror in a Windows Phone device attached to your computer.
  • Adobe FXG support:
  • With the Expression Blend Add-in for Adobe FXG Import, available when you install Expression Blend 4 SP1, you can add Adobe FXG 2.0 symbols as UserControls in Expression Blend. You can also configure your FXG settings so that when FXG files are updated outside of Expression Blend, the files you have added to Expression Blend are also updated.

New in Microsoft Expression Blend 4.0.20525.0 (Jun 8, 2010)

  • Expression Encoder 4 Pro Release Notes :
  • Opening a .mov file results in an error :
  • Attempting to open a .mov file in Expression Encoder will result in an error due to the fact that Apple QuickTime, versions 7.6.4 and later, adds a new DLL dependency to their SDK which causes the failure of .MOV files to load. However, you can work around this issue by doing the following:
  • On the Start menu, right-click Computer and, in the context menu, click Properties.
  • Click Advanced system settings.
  • In the System Properties dialog box, click Advanced.
  • In the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
  • In the System variables list, locate the Path variable and double-click it.
  • Type one of the following strings at the end of the path in the Variable value box. This adds the missing directory to your path:
  • If you are working in a 64-bit environment, type: ";C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\"
  • If you are working in a 32-bit environment, type: ";C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\"
  • Click OK in each successive dialog box.
  • Restart Windows.
  • M2TS VC-1 files not supported :
  • The M2TS VC-1 file format is not supported in this release.
  • Clipped captions in DFXP files :
  • In some cases, captions from DFXP files may be clipped in the Preview area. To see the entire caption, zoom the Preview area to a full-screen view.
  • Live Smooth Streaming system requirements :
  • Using Live Smooth Streaming requires special minimum requirements in order to prevent problems with both encoding and archiving. Make sure that your computer meets the designated Smooth Streaming System Requirements.
  • Microsoft Expression Web 4 Release Notes:
  • Fixed-position elements in Super Preview
  • Content with CSS fixed positioning may appear in several places in the SuperPreview display.
  • Flash and ActiveX objects in SuperPreview :
  • Because SuperPreview does not render Flash, ActiveX, or other object content, a region that contains an object may not be displayed at the same size as it would be displayed in a browser (depending on the underlying HTML and CSS). Set width and height dimensions (in pixels) for each DIV tag that contains an object tag to help mitigate this problem.
  • Script-triggered layout changes in SuperPreview :
  • Layout changes triggered by asynchronous JavaScript or other Ajax content may not render in SuperPreview.
  • Firefox uses default settings in SuperPreview :
  • Firefox browser views in SuperPreview are displayed with Firefox default installation settings, regardless of user-customized settings.
  • Login-controlled pages in SuperPreview :
  • SuperPreview does not prompt users for login credentials and so cannot access pages that require authentication, such as those controlled by an .htaccess file.
  • Right-to-left language rendering in SuperPreview :
  • Pages that are encoded in HTML to use a right-to-left language may not display correctly in SuperPreview, particularly in a Firefox browser display. You may be able to improve the display of these pages by choosing a larger Browser Size.
  • Selectable elements in SuperPreview:
  • Children of an HTML element with CSS overflow property set to hidden, auto, or scroll may be selectable in the SuperPreview browser view, even though they may not be visible in the rendered page.
  • Framesets in SuperPreview :
  • HTML elements inside frameset pages are not selectable in SuperPreview or visible in the DOM tree. Open the frameset pages individually to display them in SuperPreview.
  • Timed meta redirects in SuperPreview :
  • SuperPreview does not follow meta redirects that have a time interval greater than 0. Instead, navigate directly to the desired page with SuperPreview.
  • Style attributes in SuperPreview :
  • Style attribute information in the DOM tree may vary between browsers. Because of differences in the way that Firefox and Internet Explorer process web pages, SuperPreview may report different representations of style attributes in the DOM trees of each.
  • Element display size for quirks-mode pages in SuperPreview :
  • Quirks-mode pages may display the body and html element height and width incorrectly in SuperPreview. Elements inside these tags are unaffected.
  • Security certificate errors in SuperPreview :
  • Pages that display security certificate errors in a browser will not display correctly in SuperPreview.
  • Cookie behavior in SuperPreview :
  • Cookie behavior is inconsistent between browsers. Because SuperPreview relies on locally installed browsers, it will sometimes read and write local browser cookies.
  • Visited link display in SuperPreview :
  • Some links for Internet Explorer may display as "visited" in SuperPreview, depending on the user's Internet Explorer browser history.
  • Scrollbar display in SuperPreview :
  • Scrollbars may not be displayed in some SuperPreview browser views for pages with frames, iframes, or other large, scrollable regions.
  • Too many connections over FTP :
  • When the number of simultaneous FTP, SFTP, or FTPS connections exceeds the connection limit imposed by the server, Expression Web may display the error message "Too many connections from this IP." If this error occurs, click Publishing Settings, and then click Site Settings. Click the Publishing tab, and then click Edit to display the Connection Settings dialog box for the publishing destination. Set Maximum simultaneous connections to 1.
  • Deep Zoom content in pages that contain the Mark of the Web :
  • If the Mark of the Web comment is inserted in a page and then the page is opened in Internet Explorer, Deep Zoom content does not function.
  • Photoshop images with spot color or alpha channels :
  • Expression Web does not import alpha channels or spot color channels from a Photoshop image. Alpha and spot color channels are not displayed in the Import Adobe Photoshop File dialog box and are not visible in the imported image. No error message is displayed.
  • Importing Silverlight video on 64-bit Windows :
  • Expression Web will not import Silverlight video on 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 unless Window Media 11 SDK is installed. To correct this problem, download and install the Windows Media Format 11 SDK.
  • This problem does not occur on 32-bit versions of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, or on 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or Windows 7.
  • Drag and drop from remote sites :
  • In the Pulishing view, drag and drop from a remote site to the local site does not work.
  • Root-relative links in SuperPreview and Snapshot :
  • By default, pages that reference images or other content through root-relative links will not display correctly in Snapshot or SuperPreview. To correct this, on the Site menu, click Site Settings. Click the Preview tab. Check Use Microsoft Expression Development Server and select For all web pages. These settings must be configured for each site that uses root-reltaive links.
  • Copy and paste between sites :
  • If text is copied from a page in one site, closing the site, opening another site, and pasting the text does not work.
  • Page corruption with Dynamic Web Templates :
  • Applying a Dynamic Web Template to existing pages can alter the layout of the existing elements on the page and can generate anomalous markup.
  • Image scaling with high-DPI display settings :
  • Images are not correctly scaled in SuperPreview when Windows is configured to use custom DPI display settings. Because Firefox and Internet Explorer scale images differently, the same image will be displayed at different sizes when Firefox and Internet Explorer are selected for the browsers views.
  • Working on a file under source control without opening the containing site:
  • Source control functionality is not available for a file that belongs to a site under source control unless the site is opened first. To restore correct source control functionality, close and restart Expression Web, open the site from source control, and then open the file.
