USB Safely Remove Changelog

What's new in USB Safely Remove 7.0.3.1317

Nov 25, 2023
  • User interface changes:
  • We have thoroughly reworked the program’s interface to make it look better on Win 10 & 11
  • Now, under Win11, the device menu has rounded corners wherever needed
  • In the lower right corner of the menu the new button is added
  • This button allows you to show the hidden devices (usually these are mice, keyboards, Bluetooth dongles and other devices that you don’t need or don’t wish to safely remove). Now you can work with these devices directly in the menu.
  • Improved behavior:
  • The menu is positioned relative to the system tray icon rather than to the right side of the screen
  • The menu toggles visibility when you click to the system tray icon
  • The menu is no longer displayed when you open the main dialog
  • Bug fix:
  • Sometimes device icon wasn’t displayed in the “unable to stop” dialog
  • The device menu could be displayed behind other applications
  • The “Help” button didn’t work in the Settings -> Device Stop tab
  • Artifacts (black strips) might be displayed on the menu after the forced stop
  • Some settings may not be restored on another machine with different locale
  • Sometimes the native safe removal icon wasn’t hidden

New in USB Safely Remove 6.4.2.1297 (Apr 28, 2021)

  • System wide device name change:
  • Now when you change the device name in the program you will see the same name in the Device Manager, the Windows drive properties and in all other programs that displays devices. A useful feature when you need to use the device in other programs.
  • Preventive flushing of disk buffers:
  • When forcibly stops the device the program now flushes the disk buffers (for storage devices) before the operation. This maximizes the data safety of your drives.
  • Improved forced stop:
  • The previous versions couldn’t forcibly stop devices consist from a drive and a virtual CD. Usually this virtual CD contains some software that allows to unlock the encrypted content of the drive. That software in turn prevents the whole drive to be safely removed. The new version allows to forcibly stop even such drives.
  • Bug fix:
  • The device menu wasn’t displayed in some multimonitor configurations
  • The device menu button (three dots) was overlapped by the Browse button when the “Display device name” option was disabled
  • In some cases technical error displayed on device stopping

New in USB Safely Remove 6.0.6.1258 (May 28, 2017)

  • Improved forced stop:
  • Now the forced stop will unlock the device in all cases where earlier versions failed: svchost, an NTFS issue (so called $Extend$RmMetadata$TxfLog isue), when some low level program like antivirus, backup locked the drive etc. Besides now the program shows even such locking processes that open a direct connection to the drive (e.g. HD Tune) without access to the file system.
  • Reworked software update notification:
  • Now when the program notifies you about an update you can either skip future notifications for this version or ask the program to remind about this update in some time.
  • Bug fixes:
  • Command line tool crashed in some cases
  • Bug report dialog displayed network error on successful connection to the server
  • Minor glitches in interface when displayed in a non English language
  • Automatic check for updates was broken, the program never did it despite the corresponding option set

  • Registration reminder could be overlapped by the device menu and became difficult to close
  • In the classic Windows scheme some dialogs were displayed incorrectly
  • In the classic Windows scheme the device menu could be displayed in a wrong place or not displayed at all
  • Pressing ESC button in the warning about hidden device stopping didn't cancel the operation
  • In some rare cases error displayed on returning device back
  • The assistant service couldn't run when there are folders with the names like "C:Program" or "C:Program Files (x86)USB" on the computer
  • Couldn't test run a program in the global autorun, an error was raised
  • In rare cases an error could be displayed on program startup

New in USB Safely Remove 5.3.5.1228 (Jan 10, 2015)

  • Forgotten devices reminder:
  • If you forget to take out a device in the computer before you go out the program will remind you about it when you power off or log off the system. By default the feature is enabled but it can be easily disabled if it does not need.
  • Windows 10 compatibility:
  • At the moment Windows 10 is in the "developer tech preview" status, however we have tested and made the program compatible with this OS. So if you wish to play with Windows 10 USB Safely Remove will help you to manage external devices even there.
  • Forced stop improvement:
  • Some Windows services such as Distributed Link Tracking Client and Windows Search could prevent device stopping on some systems. Therefore we have added an ability to temporarily stop such services. Now in case of unsuccessful forcible stop of the device the program can stop the selected services attempt to stop the device again and activate back the services.
  • License key format change:
  • We have changed our software protection system and the license key has a new format. It means that your old license key won't be accepted and it must be converted. If you have a valid license key the program will automatically update it through the internet immediately after the installation. If you do not have an internet connection on the machine or blocked the internet access for the program with a firewall you can use this form to convert your license key. Also use this form if you wish to have a copy of your new key in your mailbox for further reinstallations of the program. Note! If your license key upgrade period has expired to this date your key will not be upgraded to the new format, but of course you can still use it with the previous releases.
  • Minor improvements:
  • Windows 8 and up: Global hotkey to call device menu is automatically assigned to Ctrl+Win+S because our default Win+S is reserved for Windows Search. On Windows 7 and previous the default hotkey is still Win+S
  • An option to never show again some message dialogs (e.g. forced stop warning) is added
  • Bugs fixed:
  • The program increased system timer frequency which might cause an increased power consumption
  • The program could crash after loading a malformed .ICO file
  • Windows 8 and up: On some systems physically removed devices were displayed on the list
  • On some configurations the program could crash on startup (then it was possible to run it manually)

New in USB Safely Remove 5.3.3.1225 (Dec 27, 2014)

New in USB Safely Remove 5.2.2.1204 (Mar 24, 2014)

  • Windows 8 support:
  • Several months ago Microsoft released a new version of Windows. It doesn't matter if we love it or not, but we have to support it. Therefore now USB Safely Remove has passed compatibility tests with Windows 8, furthermore we have added a nice MOdern UI-style skin, you can see it in the begin of the post. On Windows 8 it's set by default, however you can choose it in the settings on the other versions of Windows.
  • Fixing a drive letter to several removable drives:
  • Per many requests we have added an ability to fix a drive letter not only to a one drive but to the several drives on the condition that you connect them at different times. This feature might be used for backup purposes. When you connect two or more drives with the same fixed drive letter USB Safely Remove handles this case and displays a dialog that allows you to choose a temporary drive letter for the drives that weren't fixed to a letter.
  • Fixed drive letter sign in the menu:
  • A small but useful improvement for those who use fixing drive letters feature. Now when a drive is fixed to a letter a small lock sign is displayed in the row of the drive.
  • Other improvements and bug fixes:
  • Folder mount points are now displayed in a full size (not truncated)
  • Card reader drives are displayed even when the option "Display storage device volumes" is disabled
  • Skin scheme file now has usual web format of the colors
  • The SATA system drive was displayed in the list by default. Now it's displayed only when you enable the option "Display all storage devices"
  • Now the program doesn't add itself to the Windows startup on each launch, it does this when it's needed. So if you have a kind of startup monitor it won't display you warnings on each Windows startup
  • Fixed: Verbose logging was enabled by default
  • Fixed: Autorun programs called before changing drive letters (e.g. for fixed drive letters). This caused double calling of the autorun programs.
  • Fixed: The device menu might be displayed when user launched TaskManager (Win 8) or Customize tray icons dialog (Win 7, 8)
  • Fixed: some other minor bugs

New in USB Safely Remove 5.1.2.1182 (Apr 26, 2012)

  • The program device scanning mechanism was optimized for speed. Now the program scans for hardware changes more quick while loads the system less.
  • Correct version info added to all program modules
  • The "Apply" button in the options is enabled only if you change some settings
  • Bug fixed: Command line "forcedstop" command didn't work
  • Some small memory leaks. Fixed, now everything is dry :)
  • Bug fixed: The program could hang on device insertion in some cases
  • Bug fixed: The "Apply" button in the options may not apply changes in some cases
  • Bug fixed: Autorun doesn't run some DOS commands (e.g. pause, net)
  • Bug fixed: An error might happen after device settings export

New in USB Safely Remove 5.0 (Apr 26, 2012)

  • The new stopping menu:
  • The stopping menu was reworked to give you more convenience and control, especially when you have many drives. Now it's more informative and powerful like the menu in Zentimo but we tried to make it as simple as possible. Anyway there's always the options to return the look and feel of 4.x versions if you prefer it.
  • Full Unicode support:
  • Now you can choose any language supported by the program and it will be displayed correctly even if your system language is different. This is great news for people who are using non-Latin characters on their computers since they will never have issues with garbled texts in the program. If you are an English-speaking user you get no benefits from this feature... apart from you may have fun changing the program language to Arabic or Chinese. They look so cool :)
  • "Apply" button:
  • Using this button in the device properties or program options dialogs you can apply the changed settings and see how they influence the program without closing the options dialog
  • New options:
  • We analyzed your requests and added many options to configure the menu you asked us about. Now you can change the device icon size, hide or display storage device names or volume rows and etc. Those who have many storage devices might like these options since they let them reduce the space that the menu occupies on the screen.
  • Other improvements & changes:
  • Improved "Forced stop" feature. It unload dlls loaded from external drives without killing their processes
  • Added an option to return in use the fixed drive letters even if their drives are not connected now (Options -> Drive Letters -> Fixed Drive Letters List)
  • All other skins look and feel was also improved
  • Device icon storing format changed from .png to .ico
  • The program might not see devices connected to some kinds of external USB hubs. Fixed.
  • Windows 2000 is no longer supported

  • ClearType And System Font Support
  • Now all USB Safely Remove's dialogs, including device menu, are displayed with a currently selected theme font with ClearType support if you enabled it.
  • Spinning down drivers after stopping in Vista & Win 7
  • When you safely remove the device in Windows XP it powers the device off – in case of a flash drive its led was switched off and in case of a portable hard drive it was spun down. But Microsoft changed this behavior in Vista and it still exists in Win 7: after you stop the device on these OSes the hard drive continue spinning and flash drive continue lighting. All modern hard drives park theirs heads automatically when you unplug them so in theory this behavior shouldn’t lead to data looses or drive damages. But in practice the hard drive usually sound strangely when you unplug them on run and this makes a hard drive owner being a bit nervous when he hears that
  • USB Safely Remove can change this behavior and make the system to power down USB ports. In order to enable this feature just answer "Yes, please" when USB Safely Remove suggests you to enable it.
  • Or go to the program settings and enable "Power off the device..." feature
  • Bug fixes and other improvements

New in USB Safely Remove 4.4.1.1053 Beta 1 (Dec 8, 2010)

  • The version contains some minor bug-fixes and improvements, besides it contains one important thing: the ability to power off devices on stopping in Vista and Windows 7.
  • A bit more story on this feature. When you safely remove the device in Windows XP it powers the device off – in case off a flash drive its led was switched off and in case of a portable hard drive it was spun down. But Microsoft changed this behavior in Vista and it still exists in Win 7: after you stop the device on these OSes the hard drive continue spinning and flash drive continue lighting. All modern hard drives park their heads automatically when you unplug them so in theory this behavior shouldn’t lead to data losses or drive damages. But in practice external hard drive usually sounds strangely when you unplug it on run and this makes a hard drive owner being a bit nervous when he hears that. We have got lots of feedback requests on this feature therefore we added it to the new version.

New in USB Safely Remove 4.3.2.950 (May 10, 2010)

  • "Unable to stop" window has been reworked:
  • "Forced Stop" button became smarter, now it not only closes all files opened by the processes on the device, but it tries to close portable applications (applications that are run from the external drive you are intending to stop). USB Safely Remove sends command to close the application so they can normally stop and save their settings. If the application refuses to be closed (e.g. it displays message "Are you sure you want to exit?") you have to find the application on your desktop and close it manually, or you can bring it to the front of the desktop or just forcibly kill it.
  • Also we simplified this window interface by removing "Close programs" button. Now considering that "Forced Stop" feature became smarter, this button became useless, moreover it was confusing and a bit unsafe as pressing it could lead to closing of some important processes (e.g. your whole desktop in case if Explorer were opened on the removable drive). However we still leave the ability to close or forcibly terminate a specific program on the list from the context menu of the process (by right clicking to the process).
  • Bugs fixed:
  • "USB Safely Remove assistant service" crashed if there were too many files opened from the drive that was being stopped
  • Better compatibility with Win Vista & 7 (sometimes program may not launch on these OSes)
  • Sometimes the program may not restore hidden drive letters (if "Hide drive letters" option was disabled)
