What's new in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.9

Jun 29, 2012
  • eBook-related changes:
  • When you created an eBook with a cover picture in previous versions of Atlantis, you had to place a portrait-oriented image in a dedicated paragraph at the beginning of the source document. Starting with this new release of Atlantis, specifying cover pictures for your eBooks will be much easier.
  • The "Save as eBook" dialog of Atlantis now has a new "Cover image" box.
  • When you save a document as eBook, Atlantis automatically identifies any picture located at the top of the document as a potential cover image. But the document might contain other images, and you might want to use one of them as the cover image of your eBook. You only need to choose the desired image from the "Cover image" drop-down list.
  • If the source document contains no image, or none that you'd like to use as a cover image, you can still use an external image from a drive on your system. For this, the "Cover image" drop-down includes a "Load from file..." command. Clicking this command allows you to choose a picture file from a folder on your system. Click "Open", and Atlantis will insert the selected picture at the top of the source document and mark it as the book cover image.
  • Now you might not want a cover picture for your eBook. In this case, you need to choose "(None)" from the same drop-down list. Note that choosing "(None)" in the above drop-down will not remove any of the pictures that might be present in the source document. Only the eBook generated from your document will be affected: it will include no information regarding a cover image.
  • An improvement to the "Save as eBook" command of Atlantis regarding notes. You can now save document notes to eBook as a separate chapter with a heading.
  • An improvement to the "Save as eBook" command of Atlantis regarding landscape-oriented images.
  • When a document contains an image whose width is greater than its height previous versions of Atlantis saved it to eBook with wrong proportions.
  • An improvement to the "Save as eBook" command of Atlantis. Page margins are now saved differently to eBooks.
  • The "Save as eBook" window has now a new "Save page margins" box.
  • When this box is unchecked, Atlantis saves no information about page margins to eBook. eReaders will display the eBook with their default page margins.
  • When the "Save page margins" box is checked, you can click the "Setup..." button to specify page margins for your eBook.
  • Left, right, top and bottom margins can be specified individually.
  • You have a choice of 6 different measurement units for page margins. But note that not all of them are supported by the most popular eReaders yet.
  • A bug fix to the "Save as eBook" command. The "cover" metadata was not saved correctly to the "content.opf" file of EPUB. This led to a poorer eBook preview in some eReaders.
  • A bug fix. Non-bold headings were not saved correctly to eBooks.
  • When saving a document as eBook, Atlantis in most cases adds a "Title page" item to the eBook's table of contents. This item points to the first paragraph in the eBook. Starting with this version, you can instruct Atlantis not to add that "Title page" item to the eBook's table of contents. All you need is to create a blank heading at the beginning of the source document, and format it with "strikeout".
  • An improvement to the "Save as eBook" command of Atlantis. Previously, Atlantis saved chapter headings to eBooks as ordinary paragraphs represented by the HTML tag. From now on, Atlantis will save chapter headings to eBooks as HTML elements (, , etc). Some eReaders (e.g. FBReader, Cool Reader and AlReader) specifically look for the elements in order to identify chapter headings and display them according to the user's preferences.
  • Miscellaneous changes:
  • An improvement to the "Save cursor position" feature (the "Load / Save" tab of the "Tools | Options..." dialog). Now Atlantis can save cursor position to documents in the DOC format too.
  • The "Use Document Folder" option on the "Load / Save" tab of the "Tools | Options..." dialog has been replaced with the "Suggest saving documents to" option.
  • Previously, when the "Use Document Folder" box was checked, and you called the "Open Document" or "Save Document As..." dialogs, Atlantis automatically opened your "Document Folder" for browsing. When this option was off, the most recent directory was opened for browsing.
  • The "Suggest saving documents to" option affects the "Save Document As..." dialog only. When you call the "Open Document" dialog, Atlantis automatically opens the most recent directory regardless of whether the "Suggest saving documents to" option is checked or not.
  • A change regarding the "Insert footnote with automatic reference mark" and "Insert endnote with automatic reference mark" commands.
  • Ctrl+Alt+F is a hot key to add a new footnote with automatic reference mark. A reference mark gets inserted at the current cursor position within the document main text, and the cursor is automatically placed within a new footnote. You can then type the note text. When you are done with typing the note text, you might wish to get back to the note reference mark, and resume typing document main text. Starting from this version of Atlantis Word Processor, you can press Ctrl+Alt+F one more time without leaving the note text, and the cursor will be placed right after the note reference mark in the document main text. You could then resume typing the document text without leaving the keyboard.
  • Ctrl+Alt+D, a hot key to insert a new endnote with automatic reference mark, now works in a similar way.
  • A bug fix. Custom (non-automatic) footnote and endnote reference marks consisting of multiple characters were loaded from RTF documents incorrectly.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.7 (Apr 23, 2011)

  • This version of Atlantis Word Processor is a micro-update with a critical bug fix to the Save as eBook feature: Atlantis displayed errors when saving certain documents as eBook.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.6 (Apr 16, 2011)

  • This version of Atlantis Word Processor is a micro-update with critical bug fixes to the "Open DOCX" module of Atlantis:
  • Atlantis did not load DOCX documents with footnotes correctly.
  • Atlantis did not load the "Do not hyphenate" paragraph formatting from documents in the DOCX format.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.5 (Mar 24, 2011)

  • Bug fix: the Batch conversion tool of Atlantis displayed errors when converting certain documents with manual page breaks to the EPUB format.
  • Bug fix: the "Previous page"/"Next page" commands of the Navigation tool did not bring the caret into view when there was a selection in the document.
  • Improvement regarding pictures in certain RTF documents (the issue was discussed on the Atlantis Word Processor Forum – click here for details).
  • Improvement to the "Open DOCX" module of Atlantis: when a DOCX document contains links to external pictures, Atlantis now tries to load those external pictures and embed them into the document.
  • Change related to the Atlantis Help. From now on, whenever you try to access a Help topic from within Atlantis, and the Help file is missing from the home folder of Atlantis (this can happen if you instructed Atlantis not to install the Help file during setup), Atlantis will try to display the topic in its Online Help. So, if your computer is permanently connected to the Internet, you might just as well not install the Atlantis offline Help on your local hard disk during setup, and rely on the Online Help exclusively.
  • Change to the Save as Web page feature. Previously, when Atlantis saved a document as a Web page, it always saved the original font color and underline formatting of the hyperlinks as is. As a result, the hyperlinks present in the HTML files produced by Atlantis displayed with their preset formatting in the Web browsers, and the custom formatting for hyperlinks specified in the Web browser options was ignored.
  • From now on, Atlantis will behave differently in this respect. The original font color and underline formatting of hyperlinks formatted with the Atlantis "default formatting for hyperlinks" will not be saved to the Web pages Atlantis outputs. Accordingly, these Web pages will display with the browser's own default behavior regarding hyperlink formatting.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.4 (Feb 24, 2011)

  • Navigation tool:
  • You will use this Navigation tool to browse for document objects in a straight and convenient way.
  • A new "Select browse object" button is available at the bottom of the vertical scrollbar in the document window:
  • When you have chosen an object of interest, you can use the related "Previous" and "Next" buttons to navigate to the closest instances of the chosen object in the backward or forward direction. These "Previous" and "Next" buttons are located right above and below the "Select browse object" button respectively:
  • The "Previous" button scans the document in the backward direction starting from the current caret position. The "Next" button scans the document in the forward direction starting from the current caret position. Alternatively, you could use the corresponding hot keys, "Ctrl+PgUp" for the "Previous" object, "Ctrl+PgDn" for the "Next" object. Each found object is automatically brought into view.
  • eBook-related changes:
  • Bug in the "Save as eBook" feature fixed: line spacing was not always saved to eBook files correctly.
  • Changes to the "Save as eBook" feature: scalability of Atlantis EPUBs improved by switching to the "em" measurement unit in the CSS file.
  • Improvement to the "Save as eBook" feature: when a document contains multiple instances of the same image, now only one graphic file is saved for all the instances to the eBook file.
  • Miscellaneous changes:
  • The "Find" feature of Atlantis can now search for "any highlight color". If you check the "Format" box below the "Find" edit box in the "Find / Replace" dialog.
  • Previously you could search for text fragments formatted with individual highlight colors only.
  • "Iconless" commands are now displayed differently on Atlantis toolbars. In previous versions of Atlantis, "iconless" commands were displayed as long buttons with text captions.
  • A hot key can be now assigned to the "Add to dictionary" command. By associating a hot key with this command, you could add red-underlined words in the document to the spellcheck dictionary without leaving the keyboard.
  • To assign a hot key to the "Add to dictionary command", choose the "Tools | Hot Keys..." menu command of Atlantis. The "Add to dictionary command" is available under the "Tools" category:
  • Click in the "New hot key" box, press the desired hot key (on the below screen capture - "Alt+A"), click the "Assign" button, then the "OK" button.
  • After this whenever you need to add a red-underlined word (a word flagged by the spellchecker as misspelt) to the spellcheck dictionary, you could place the caret anywhere within that word.
  • The spellchecker now supports much longer phrases in its dictionaries. The spellchecker in previous versions of Atlantis did not support phrases longer than 4 words. Now you can add much longer phrases (up to 12 words and up to 63 characters including space characters).
  • Click here for more information on adding phrases to the spellchecker dictionary of Atlantis.
  • A new "Convert to manual list" command has been added. If you right-click any automatic list (either bulleted or numbered) in a document, and choose the "Convert to Manual List" command.
  • The automatic list gets converted to a manual list. Automatic numbers and bullets get replaced with normal "editable" text. A list with manual numbers or bullets can be then copied to other applications which do not support automatic lists, or saved to a plain text file.
  • A limitation regarding maximum page margin size in Atlantis documents has been lifted. Previously Atlantis did not allow page margins larger than 40% of page width/height. From now on, you can use page margins of any size.
  • A minor change has been made to the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" option of the AutoCorrect tool of Atlantis. Now the AutoCorrect does not capitalize first letter following ?" or !". In most cases, text terminated with ? or ! and enclosed between quotation marks, is a direct speech not a quotation.
  • Improvements to the MS Word DOC document format support in Atlantis.
  • Previously Atlantis did not load the "Comments" item of document properties from existing DOC files generated by MS Word.
  • Also if you added "Comments" to a document in the "File | Properties..." dialog of Atlantis:
  • Bug in the "Overused words" feature fixed: inflected forms of words were not grouped correctly.
  • A bug regarding the "Shrink page count" command has been fixed. Due to that bug, the "Shrink page count" command was permanently disabled (greyed out) in Atlantis.
  • A Windows Vista / Windows 7 -related glitch has been fixed. Under the Aero theme, the current document line, in some cases, displayed partially off the document window.
  • A bug related to the typewriter sounds of Atlantis and its default ("Basic") sound scheme has been fixed. When typing fast, not every key press generated a typewriter sound.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.3 (Nov 27, 2010)

  • When a document is in the "Print Layout" view mode ("Print Layout" is checked in the "View" main menu), you can now save screen space by hiding the blank areas at the top and bottom of each page, and the space between the pages.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.5.0 (Jan 29, 2010)

  • This release of Atlantis Word Processor includes support for the OpenDocument (ODF) format, a number of improvements to the Save as eBook feature, plus other changes.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.4.3 (Nov 30, 2009)

  • Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.4.3 introduces a new feature "Overlong sentences", plus a number of improvements to the "Save as eBook" feature, and other changes and fixes.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.4.2 (Sep 23, 2009)

  • This version of Atlantis has a number of amendments to the Save as eBook feature:
  • Multilevel tables of contents are now supported in eBooks. Previously, Atlantis included only "Heading 1" paragraphs in the Table Of Contents that it saved to EPUB files. All Heading-style paragraphs from the source documents are now included so that the EPUB Tables Of Contents display as a multilevel hierarchy whenever applicable.
  • Manual page breaks in a source document are now correctly saved to eBooks.
  • Support for "very long" topics in eBooks has been added. Some eBook readers are unable to display eBooks with very long topics. Atlantis now automatically splits overlong topics into multiple XHTML files within the EPUB package.
  • Characters from so called "symbol fonts" (Symbol, Webdings, Wingdings, etc) are now saved by Atlantis to EPUBs as graphic files. In this way these characters display correctly on any eBook reader.
  • Atlantis now "remembers" the so called metadata (basic information about a book: Book Title, Author, Identifier, etc) entered for each document when you save it as eBook. If you decide to resave your document as eBook, Atlantis will automatically suggest the last used metadata.
  • More fields (Publisher, Coverage, Rights, Price, Publication Date) have been added to the "Save as eBook" dialog of Atlantis

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.4.0 (Jun 11, 2009)

  • It is a minor release with the "Save as eBook" feature.

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.3.0 (May 25, 2009)

  • It is a minor release with support for the DOCX, a new document format of MS Word 2007

New in Portable Atlantis Word Processor 1.6.2.0 (Apr 23, 2009)

  • Overused Words
  • All creative writers know that they should avoid repetitions and clichés if they want their texts to be read with any interest or pleasure. Overused words are simply boring and will invariably put readers off, whether these "tired" words belong to the common stock of catch phrases used by most people, or to the writer’s own idiosyncratic style. Obviously, overuse of any kind will be more noticeable if it occurs within short portions of text.
  • This is when the Atlantis "Overused words" feature comes in handy. It will show detailed statistics about repetitions and word frequency. This will tell you where words need to be replaced with synonyms, or whole paragraphs reworked.
  • Repetitions
  • You will use this tab to scan your document for repetitions of words or phrases.
  • Atlantis will consider that two words or phrases make a repetition when they are identical and are separated by less words than the amount specified as the minimal distance allowed between repeats. The "Ignore repetitions separated by at least NN words" setting allows you to control how close two identical words or phrases have to be to each other to be treated as a repetition. If you choose a smaller separating number, fewer pairs will be reported as a repetition (the two words will have to be very close to each other to be reported as repeats). On the other hand, a larger number will cause more words to be reported as a repetition (the two words could be located at some distance from each other).
  • Repetitions of completely identical words obviously create redundancy. But so will repeats of words whose spelling is different but are pronounced in the same way (homophones). The same can be said of prefixed or suffixed variants of related words (inflected or derivative forms). All such repeats can be detected by Atlantis.
  • When "Report inflected forms" is checked, Atlantis will report repetitions of the same words, but also repetitions of inflected forms (or derivatives) of these same words. For example, occurrences of "designer" and "redesigned", "spelling" and "misspelt", "begun" and "beginner", etc will be reported as repetitions if they are found "too close" to each other.
  • Note that the present version of Atlantis has built-in support only for inflected forms & homophones of the English language. You’ll have to add custom inflected forms and homophones yourself manually for other languages than English.
  • You can eliminate the repetition by reworking the corresponding sentences. This can be done by rephrasing them, or by adding more text between the repeated words, or by replacing one of the repeated words with a synonym. You can look up and replace words with synonyms by right-clicking the words in the document window and launching the Thesaurus command from the Atlantis context menu.
  • Atlantis will highlight all the related occurrences as a multiple selection in the document window.
  • When all occurrences are selected, you can close the "Overused Words" dialog, and navigate among the various occurrences using the "Show more selections" button on the Atlantis toolbars.
  • You can also format all the selected words in any suitable way (underline, font color, special style, etc) so that you can deal with them at a later time.
  • You might want to entirely exclude some words or phrases from the texts that you write. For example, you might have your own "idiosyncratic" set of "tired" words or phrases. If you believe that these "tired" words reduce the quality of your texts, you could add them to the list of unwanted words & phrases so that Atlantis can warn you about their use. There are two ways to do this.
  • This will automatically add the currently highlighted item to your custom list of unwanted words & phrases.
  • An important note. Phrases are reported only if they occur at least twice in the document. But phrases included in the unwanted list are always reported, even when they occur only once.
  • The entire wordlist will be sent to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste it into any document in Atlantis, including the Clippy Bank, to examine it at a later time.
  • Writing Time & Speed
  • When you have to work on a document under time constraints, you might want to know how long you spend writing it, and how long it would take to complete this document. This version of Atlantis gives you such information.
  • As you already know, Atlantis offers status bar panels reporting character count. These panels are also enabled through the "Tools | Status Bar..." dialog. They allow you to determine how much text should still be added to your document if you know how many characters have to be included in the whole document.
  • The new "Writing time" panel displays how much time you spent writing the active document. This is not the time between when the document was created and now, or the total time the document was open. It is the time you actually spent typing text in the active document or formatting it.
  • The "Writing speed" panel says how quickly you add text to your document. When you know your "writing speed" and how many characters still need to be added to your document, it is fairly easy to find out how much time it will take to complete the document. For example, if your writing speed is 200 chars/min, and you still have to add 2,000 characters to your document, completing the document should take about 10 minutes.
  • All information about writing time & speed is stored by Atlantis in the Windows Registry (or in an INI file if you have chosen that global option). At times, you might need to reset that information to 0. Endnote Suppression
  • As you might remember, endnotes of a document section can appear either at the end of that section, or at the end of the document itself.
  • When you choose "End of document" as the location for endnotes, these will naturally appear after the last section in the document. However, at times and in documents with complex structures, you might still want to keep all the endnotes at the end of a specific section, and not at the end of the document as originally set. For example, the last section of a document could include an index or a set of appendixes. Accordingly, you will need to have all the endnotes before that last special section, not after it.
  • This option is applicable to documents where endnotes are supposed to be displayed at the end of document section:
  • When you enable this "Suppress endnotes" option for a particular document section, all its endnotes will appear at the end of the next section. Let's suppose that you have five sections in your document. The first four are "chapters," and the last one is an index.
  • Miscellaneous Features and Fixes
  • In this version of Atlantis you can transfer page settings between documents with a few mouse clicks. Let's suppose that you want to use the page settings of Document 1 in Document 2.
  • The page settings of Document 1 will automatically be applied to the active document (Document 2).
  • This version of Atlantis has improved "Full screen" and "View side by side" modes. These two modes can now work concurrently so that you can view two documents side by side under the Full Screen mode.
  • Atlantis now remembers the view mode that you choose in its various
  • This makes it easier to choose a proper suggestion from a long list of suggestions.
  • Note that the built-in support for inflected forms is offered only for English documents in this version of Atlantis.
  • This command can be used to create a cloned copy of the active document without affecting the display of the original file. For example, at some stage you might want to place a copy of the active document on your memory flash drive. For this, simply choose the "Save Copy As..." command, and specify your memory flash drive as the target drive.
  • This new command can be placed onto the Atlantis toolbars ("Tools | Toolbars..."). It can also be assigned a hot key ("Tools | Hot Keys...").
  • In this version of Atlantis you can exclude words from the spellchecker lexicons of Atlantis. Please click here for details.
  • Under some Windows themes and on some systems, the drop-down color panel of the "Highlight" toolbar button appeared blank, or the "Special symbol" buttons in the "Find / Replace" dialog were missing or had no graphic image. This version of Atlantis includes a fix for these problems.
