The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1: All That Remains Review on PC

Telltale Games has always impressed fans of point and click adventure titles, but the studio really entered the mainstream with The Walking Dead, its adaptation of the famous comic book series, which told a separate story across five different episodes.

After that extremely popular first season, Telltale is back with The Walking Dead Season 2, releasing the first episode called All That Remains.

Promising to introduce a new protagonist, Clementine, as well as to continue the story and take into account choices made in the previous chapters, the new series is looking set to be as successful, if not more so, than its predecessor.

Does it manage to live up to the hype or should the dead keep on walking? Let's find out.

Play as Clementine ...
... and survive the walkers

The Walking Dead Season 1 was a great experience and, if you haven't played it, be warned that there are some spoilers in the review.

After the conclusion of Episode 5, Clementine is the new protagonist of the series, as Lee, the main hero of the first season, is no longer able to fulfill his duties. The new season picks up a short time after that, as Clementine is now traveling through the countryside with Omid and Christa. After a series of new events, she is separated from them and must explore the wilderness on her own.

What awaits is a much more brutal world than the one from the first season, as the few remaining survivors have already been through quite a lot and aren't exactly welcoming strangers with open arms, even if they're a little girl like Clem.

While she isn't an adult or even a teenager, Clementine has already gone through a lot. This, coupled with the fact that she still isn't that good with using guns or fighting zombies hand-to-hand, delivers an experience that's a bit different than the one from the first season, in which Lee was a capable man.

While Telltale's recent projects have gotten some amount of criticism over the fact that there isn't a lot of adventure gameplay, as opposed to just quick-time events, All That Remains has a fair share of actual gameplay moments. Sure, most of them rely on walking around a small area and trying to see which objects can be interacted with, but it's still quite good.

Of course, an important part of the actual gameplay are the dialog sequences. Even if Clem is a little girl, adults will remember her words and her stance on different things, especially the many strangers she meets along the way.

Another big part of the actual gameplay are the aforementioned quick-time events, as there are many sequences in which Clem has to act fast or risk being devoured by zombies and other such creatures. Most of them have a good flow, but there are a few moments in which it's unclear what you have to do and you end up dying.

There are still some glitches affecting the title, including one that didn't allow the game to import save game files from the first season. Fortunately, with a bit of tinkering, we were able to get it to work and continue with the choices from the first set of adventures.

In terms of visuals, the same stylized graphics from the first season make a comeback. While that certainly keeps the continuity going, a few improvements would've been welcomed. There are still some low-quality textures, especially when the camera zooms in on certain objects. Characters are modeled relatively well, but it's not anything extraordinary.

The soundtrack is adequately haunting and there are moments in which the game goes silent, leaving you and Clementine alone. Voice acting is also decent, with special mention going to Melissa Hutchison as Clementine. The rest of the cast is relatively forgettable, but here's hoping they'll get more screen time in the following episodes.

Remember old friends ...
... and make new ones

Conclusion

The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1: All That Remains is a great return of the popular series. Clementine is a good protagonist and players are certainly going to root for her after the events from this first chapter. There are still some problems in terms of gameplay or visuals, but the narrative experience is second to none.
